It's never easy to balance the fast-paced life of a celebrity with the equally demanding obligations of a mother.
Calista Flockhart had to handle all of this family pressure, both on and off screen. A mother and regular on the cast of
Brothers & Sisters, the actress claimed that she fell apart when she had to make a decision to quit one of those roles. She ended her stint as a full-time mom to her son, Liam, in order to return to acting.
Flockhart raised her adoptive child, Liam, from infancy. Keeping herself away from the spotlight for a while, she found it best to nurture the growing toddler and be there for him. However, in 2006, she made her return to the small screen. The former star of
Ally McBeal then took on a role in the hit ABC series,
Brothers and Sisters.
At first she tried her hand on getting back on track with acting. Later on, she found it more and more difficult to find time for her family. She didn't realize how hard it would be until she was dragged farther and farther from Liam.
“All of a sudden, I wasn't home to pick Liam up from school, and I realized it wasn't really OK, and I wasn't happy, and I was scratching my eyes out. I couldn't believe I'd put myself in this situation,” Flockhart admitted to
C magazine. It's definitely a daunting task to keep up with the entertainment industry lifestyle and be a stay-at-home parent.
Despite all the distress, Calista Flockhart felt grateful that she still has someone to depend on. Her boyfriend Harrison Ford, star of the Indiana Jones franchise, became a full-time dad just for her and Liam. She was very appreciative to him, adding “[I] Was very comforted knowing that Harrison was there - he really stepped up and became a stay-at-home dad.”
On
Brothers & Sisters, Flockhart has more family issues to deal with. She plays the character Kitty Walker, a communications director and the second eldest of the Walker family. She was recently seen on the episode “Book Burning,” in which a tell-all memoir she wrote caused a lot of damage and drama to the family.
The next episode of
Brothers & Sisters, “Tug of War,” will be aired on October 12, 10pm, on ABC.
