Brothers and Sisters was named Best Drama for the year, which of course made the producers glad they stuck with it.
It was a tight competition, as the contenders included
Grey's Anatomy and
Mad Men. BBC America's
Skins was also nominated for the award, as well as HBO's
True Blood.
Another big winner was
Parks and Recreation, which snagged an award for Best Individual Episode. It's worth noting that Rob Lowe, who plays Robert McCallister on
Brothers and Sisters, will be
joining the comedy later this year.
He revealed how excited he was about starring in
Parks and Recreation that he updated his Twitter account about it. "P-Rex table reading: hilarious," Rob Lowe wrote. "Great people, great writing. Gonna be fun."
But back to the GLAAD award recipients. Aside from
Brothers and Sisters, another ABC staple emerged victorious at the event. The daytime soap
One Life to Live earned the title of Outstanding Daily Drama.
Other small screen winners include
The Oprah Winfrey Show and MSNBC's
The Rachel Maddow Show. Even the indie film
Little Ashes starring Robert Pattinson of
Twilight fame as acclaimed artist Salvador Dali was named a winner.
Furthermore, Joy Behar of
The View was presented with the Excellence in Media Award. Another big winner of the night was Cynthia Nixon of
Sex and the City, who was honored with the Vito Russo Award. The prize is usually given to an openly gay media professional who has made a big difference in promoting equal rights for the gay community.

Brothers and Sisters, of course, has prided itself in its handling of that particular issue with Kevin and Scotty's characters. Even the actors - Matthew Rhys and Luke Macfarlane - have acknowledged the achievement, and it's great that GLAAD does too.
