Taking the lead is Malcolm in the Middle's Bryan Cranston as Walter White, a struggling high school chemistry teacher with a handicapped child and a pregnant wife. In the pilot eoisode, White is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, he "loses it" and resorts to use his chemistry skills to new heights. He eventually turns to a life of crime, setting up a meth lab in order to ensure that his family has a secure future.
Joining Cranston, who is also credited as Lucifer on Fallen, on Breaking Bad is Anna Gunn, who plays his nicely grumpy wife Skyler. Gunn is best known for her roles on Deadwood, The Practice and The Guardian. R.J. Mitte, who has a mild case of cerebral palsy in real life, also appears as Walt Jr., White's smartaleck son who is also afflicted with cerebral palsy.
Walt partners with grungy teen meth-head Jesse, who is portrayed by Big Love's Aaron Paul, who's trying to launch his own tweak factory. With Walt's chemistry expertise, they cook up primo ice that attracts both profits and murderous enemies.
Breaking Bad comes from the American Southwest slang phrase "to break bad," meaning to challenge conventions, to defy authority and to skirt the edges of the law. The series is set in Albuquerque, NM, with its first season consisting of nine episode. However, due to the writers' strike, only seven episodes have been produced so far.
