FOX Orders 'Backstrom,' New Series from 'Bones' Creator with Rainn Wilson
Tuesday, January 7, 2014
has given a 13-episode order to a new show that features the unlikely
pairing of Hart Hanson, the creator of the network's hit series Bones, and The Office star Rainn Wilson,
The network has ordered Backstrom, a crime drama based on a popular book series about an offensive detective who struggles to fix his self-destructive ways while leading the Serious Crimnes Unit in Portland.
The show stars Wilson, best known as Dwight Schrute from NBC's The Office, as the title character, Detective Everett Backstrom. The cast also features Kristoffer Polaha (Ringer, Life Unexpected), 24's Dennis Haysbert and Page Kennedy (Weeds' drug dealer U-Turn).
Like Hanson's other projects (Bones and The Finder), Backstrom is based on a series of books, this one written by renowned Swedish criminologist Leif G.W. Persson. It was originally a pilot in development at CBS, but the network passed on it and it was saved by FOX.
This marks the third big drama already given a 13-episode order by FOX, which is breaking the traditional model of waiting for the actual pilot season to pick up new shows. Besides Backstrom, FOX also has Hieroglyph, a fantasy drama set in ancient Egypt, and Gotham, a drama about the origin of Commission Gordon from Batman.
Backstrom, and the other FOX acquisitions, will air sometime in the 2014-2015 TV season.
