'Bones' Star Talks Therapy and Relationships

This season's Bones has two of the show's lead characters, Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan and Agent Seeley Booth, undergoing psychiatric counseling, and this interesting plot development has made series star David Boreanaz quite happy, not only because it sets the show apart, but also makes the show more humorous.

“These two have to go to therapy in order to deal with their everyday working lives, which I think is very funny, and that's never been seen on television, which I think is unique,” Boreanaz, who plays Booth, told the Boston Herald.

The two characters go into counseling after Booth arrests the father of his forensic anthropologist partner, Bones, played by Emily Deschanel.  FBI psychologist, Dr. Sweets (John Francis Daley) is expected to help the pair's relationship, but when it comes to talking about a possible romance between Booth and Bones, Boreanaz remains tight-lipped.

The 38-year-old actor was, however, generous enough to explain just how hard he and Deschanel work to fully understand their characters' relationship.

“[Emily and I] find time in order to create that relationship and know very much a lot about our personal lives. That's what we kind of strive for each episode,” he told the Boston Herald.  “We want to dive into our characters' relationship and manifest it in a way that's going to take us some place new and challenging, but [we also know] when to pull back.  I think that's our key and that's probably been the growth from the beginning of the show.  It's a very interesting tree that's grown.”

Boreanaz, who serves as a producer, also praised Bones executives, who give the cast the opportunity to talk about their respective characters and ideas.  This season, he is hoping fans will learn more about Booth's brother, but is quick to add that he intends to keep Bones' tone on the lighter side.

“The one thing I don't really want to do is dive into his painful experience being a sniper and all that procedural stuff,” he said.  “I'm more concerned about the relationship with the characters.  My relationship with Bones and her relationship with me.”
