Have we heard enough about the Bones baby planned for the Brennan and Booth family? Apparently not for me or the other members of the press who chatted with Emily Deschanel and Executive Producer Stephen Nathan. The longtime Bones colleagues were eager to share some never before heard details about the pregnancy, the challenges in Brennan and Booth’s relationship as s result of Booth’s gambling addiction, emerging villains, plans for season 11, and so much more. Let’s get straight to it!

Is Season 11 a Done Deal?

Well, that’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? Though the question wasn’t directly put to Nathan and Deschanel, we did get a response that indicated the deal is about as done as it can be without having the paper in hand. The question was about if we can expect any time jumps in the near future. Mr. Nathan’s response was, “The plan is to see a time jump when we start season 11.” So, take that for what it’s worth, people, but it sounds like the fat lady done sang.

What Kind of Pregnancy Complications Will Brennan Have?

With so much talk about complications, we couldn’t help delving into this aspect of the show right off the bat. In response, Emily deferred to Stephen at first.

“Really the pregnancy is going to have a little bit more impact on them this season because Brennan now realizes what it is to have a child. Having the family expand and grow — now she knows the tremendous risk that she and Booth’s job have in terms of how it affects their family. So, she is going to have to deal with that,” explained Nathan. “There are emotional considerations that surprise Brennan and will affect the pregnancy for the rest of the season.”

“You’ll see Brennan going through a whole thing where she doesn’t really kind of accept her pregnancy for a period of time,” added Deschanel. “I think that having a second pregnancy is different than having a first pregnancy and each one is different and Brennan’s experiencing that. She realizes what it means when you are working in this kind of world, crime, putting yourself in danger … so she’s out of the field a little bit more this time and you’ll see there’s a lot of emotional things that happen with Brennan because of this pregnancy. It’s different for me, Emily, too, the second time around, let me tell you. It’s interesting.”

Deschanel submits that her naivete was probably helpful both for herself and for her character of Brennan that first around.

Are Twins or Triplets a Possibility?

Though Deschanel admitted she has yet to read the script for the Bones season 10 finale, it looks like twins may be a possibility, but that there are no major medical issues the couple will face like Angela and Jack did with Michael Vincent.

“There’s not anything big medically that’s a huge problem; it’s more the emotional repercussions and the realization of Brennan having another child coupled with Booth’s relapse in to gambling that makes things complicated. At the same time it seems like Brennan is a little more delicate this pregnancy, but nothing real major like that like she’s on bed rest or like she’s having many babies … that we know of yet,” she added with a chuckle.

“The ‘baby-slash-babies’ will not appear this year,” Nathan explained. “I know everyone kind of expects it, but we’ve had a lot of births on the show, and we know how that goes. We’re trying to approach the whole thing a bit differently … things are more fraught emotionally for both of them for many, many reasons. There’s also the preponderance of cases that have affected their life over the past ten years of working together. And what that how that affects their perception of their situation and of the world they want to bring their new child into and raise their family,” Elaborated Nathan. “So all of this has a tremendous impact on them. Do they want to keep getting shot at — that’s a real question.

Episode 15 Brings Pregnancy and Addiction Simultaneously

“The storyline that is the most emotionally rich for us is Booth’s relapse into gambling and how it affects Brennan and the family. The ripples go out from that and cause a lot of changes. Not only for Brennan and Booth but for the other characters as well. There are so many, really, there’s great stuff between Cam and Arastoo with Arastoo going off to Iran and their relationship being in jeopardy and his life being in jeopardy.

What episode do Brennan’s pregnancy and Booth’s addiction surface in and which comes first? “I don’t want to give away anything,” Nathan demurred as he referred to an episode list he said he had in his hands. “They all kind of happen around the same time. That’s why it’s so fraught. All of these things are sort of simultaneous events. I think it’s episode 15.”

By my calculations, Boneheads, that would mean April 23, but don’t quote me (Catherine) on that.

Big Bads Galore, Including a Pelant Resurgeance

“We are actually going to be dealing with more than one,” said Nathan. “We have an interesting new serial killer who appears and gets somewhat resolved in the second half of the season. Someone is on death row and about to be executed, but at the very end ‘someone’ resurfaces from beyond the grave to alter everybody’s life yet again. No ghosts, but I would imagine people who are committed to the show will know that our favorite serial killer was Pelant, and although Pelant is in fact dead, the (lingering) affects of Pelant’s life have not gone away.”

Who Will Guest Star This Spring?

Cyndi Lauper, we already know, appears in “The Psychic in the Soup,” the Bones spring premiere. Both Nathan and Deschanel spoke highly of Lauper.

“She is a dream to work with. She is such an interesting talented eccentric person. She’s so much fun and it’s just a wonderful character. Very funny she’s a very funny person. I’d have her all the time!”

The duo also mentioned Linda Lavin of Alice notoriety as a visiting star during the second half of season 10. Deschanel took the opportunity to mention once again how delightful it was to work with Downton Abby‘s Phyllis Logan in “The Lost Love in the Foreign Land.”

What Can We Expect from the Finale?

Nathan had this to say: “Brennan’s pregnancy will have a tremendous impact on the series certainly giving us a season finale that is deeply affected by it.”

So, Bones fans, there you have it: baby(ies), gambling, Pelant, Lauper, Arastoo in Iran.
