'Big Shots' Stars Obsessed with Ratings

The cast of Big ShotsWorking on a television series can make an actor overly ratings-conscious.  Just ask Christopher Titus, one of the stars of ABC's drama, Big Shots.  The 41-year-old actor-comedian told Access Hollywood last month that his costars Dylan McDermott and Joshua Malina are always on top of things when it comes to analyzing the show's ratings.

“The funniest thing is to watch on Friday morning when [McDermott and Malina] have their PDAs out and they're just going at it.  They're trying to analyze the ratings,” Titus said.  “Malina is such a nerd.  Malina will come in, literally, everyday with a new article.”

Titus, on the other hand, claims he doesn't bother too much about ratings, especially since he learned from executive-producing his now defunct eponymous sitcom that good ratings aren't always a determining factor in a show's longevity.

“I was crazy about [ratings] for the first year [of Titus].  Insane! I would call the ratings lawyer like ten times,” he said, “and then I made the network president mad and the show got cancelled.  The ratings were still really high… so at the end of the day it doesn't matter.”

Although Big Shots has not consistently delivered impressive numbers for the network, it seems to have peaked the interest of straight, single male viewers. This, at first, came as a surprise to Christopher Titus.

“That was kind of a revelation for me,” he said, adding that it took his own brother awhile to see the value of the show.  “The critics kind of went after us [but] I'm finding people on the street like it… I don't know how it's happening.  The one thing we always said – me, Dylan, Mike [Vartan] and Josh, we get along so well.”

On Big Shots, Titus plays Brody Johns, founder of the successful Alpha Crisis Management company.  Out of the show's four male lead characters, Titus' Brody is arguably the least problematic.

“It's weird.  When I first read it, I thought this guy's an A-hole,” Titus said.  “He's this loud and obnoxious guy and the reason he is so loud and obnoxious is because he has a lot of integrity.  He keeps his life real straight so he can do what he wants and no one can really call him on anything… he loves his wife and she henpecks him a bit, and he's OK with it because he realizes what he has.”

Big Shots airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
