It appears as though age is never an excuse for Oscar-winning actress Ellen Burstyn. After about a decade in the business, she was last seen on the HBO series
Big Love and has stated that she has no plans of halting her career.
Burstyn’s mother asked her when Ellen turned 65, “Are you going to retire soon?” She boldly replied with, “Why on earth would I want to do that?” This only proves that once you’re really enjoying what you do, taking a breather isn’t that easy of an option.
On
Big Love, she was cast as Nancy, the mother of Barbara, one of the polygamous Bill Henrickson’s wives. She joined
Jeanne Tripplehorn and series star
Bill Paxton, and has just come from filming an episode for the show’s third season.
Ellen Burstyn has her roles going for her, as she has also booked a matriarchal spot on the highly anticipated film
W. She’s been cast in the role of Barbara Bush in the Oliver Stone film, which is something she raved on.
“Working with Oliver Stone is exciting,” Burstyn admitted. “He has a very kind of volatile personality. He hasn't been exploding all over the place, but you can kind of feel it below the surface that he could explode at any time. But he's very wildly talented and very creative and charming - in an odd way. He's very sweet and has been very nice to me. So I am having a good time.”
After her character was introduced on
Big Love, Burstyn worked on the Canadian production
The Stone Angel. It opened in limited release, and was based on the novel by Canadian writer Margaret Laurence. Burstyn got the title role of Hagar, a feisty woman suffering from dementia while struggling against living in a nursing home.
Since the HBO drama series on polygamy hasn’t returned yet, Burstyn has signed on for other projects. She has booked roles in
Our Lady of Victory,
Greta and
Possible Side Effects.
Big Love, which also stars
Chloë Sevigny and
Ginnifer Goodwin, is slated to release its third season on January of 2009.
