Amanda Seyfried, who is currently shooting the third season of the HBO series
Big Love, will headline the big screen adaptation of Nicholas Sparks'
Dear John opposite Channing Tatum. Sparks is the novelist behind
A Walk to Remember,
The Notebook, and
Message in a Bottle, all international bestsellers turned into feature-length films.
Dear John will be directed by Lasse Hallstrom and begin shooting in mid-October in South Carolina. Seyfried, who plays Sarah Henrickson on
Big Love, will play a conservative college student who falls for a soldier (Tatum) on leave. While it may sound simple enough on paper, never take a Nicholas Sparks work at face value. It is bound to be awash with complications and tearjerkers.
Other than
Big Love, Seyfried starred in
Mean Girls, had a recurring role on
Veronica Mars, and, most recently, starred in the musical comedy
Mamma Mia, an international box office sensation at over $415 million worldwide so far, with Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep.
Hallstrom's previous works, meanwhile, include
Casanova,
The Cider House Rules, and
Chocolat.
Seyfried, 22, from Pennsylvania started her career appearing on the cover of Francine Pascal books. She then pursued modeling when she was 11, before landing a part on the daytime drama
The Guiding Light. In 2000, she bagged the role of Lucy Montgomery on
As The World Turns and eventually the role of Joni Stafford on
All My Children.
Big Love chronicles a modern day polygamist Bill Henrickson from Utah as he tries to juggle life among his three wives: Barb (the legal wife/first wife), Nicki (the second wife) and Margene (the third wife), plus their extended family of seven kids.
The third season of
Big Love will premiere on January 11, 2009. It stars
Bill Paxton,
Jeanne Tripplehorn,
Chloe Sevigny, and
Ginnifer Goodwin.
