Exclusive Interview: Katie and Luke from 'Beauty and the Geek'
Friday, October 19, 2007

Luke and KatieKatie and Luke are the two latest contestants to be eliminated from Beauty and the Geek. Katie is the sorority girl who currently resides in Schaumburg, Illinois, and her partner Luke is the electrical engineering major at Ohio State. They both spoke to BuddyTV about how much fun they had on the show, Luke's makeover process, and how much they will miss their new friends. Below you will find an audiofile as well as a transcript of their interview.

Hey everybody, this is Debbie at BuddyTV, and I am with Katie and Luke from Beauty and the Geek. Hey guys.

Katie: Hi.

So, tell me how you got cast on the show in the first place. Let's start with Katie.

Katie: I was in a nightclub in Chicago, Illinois, and they had approached me and all my girlfriends about trying out for this show, Age of Love. So, me and all my girlfriends went and had a couple cocktails and tried out for Age of Love. And they had called me and asked me if they could submit my stuff for Beauty and the Geek. At first, I was a little thrown off, and was like, "Wow, you know, I don't know whether to take that as an insult." But after a while, I realized that it would be an awesome opportunity, and I was definitely excited when I made the show.

So, did you also watch Age of Love?

Katie: Yeah, I did. I watched it.

And, which show do you like better? Are you glad that you got on Beauty and the Geek instead?

Katie: Yes, I'm very glad. I don't know if I would have actually gone on the show Age of Love because it's like a catty fight-over-a-guy show. I don't think I would have done that show, but it was fun to try out. But when they told me about Beauty and the Geek, I was definitely excited because I thought that the show had such a good-hearted meaning, and just had really great morals and values to the show. So, I was definitely excited.

Cool. And how about you, Luke?

Luke: Yeah, I had seen one episode before I originally tried out. The reason why I tried out was because they had casting in Columbus, and one of my friends and his girlfriend watches the show and saw that they had casting here, and suggested that someone from the robotics should try out for it. So, the robotics guys got together and talked, and like, "You know, if there's one person who can make it on the show, be on TV, that would be Luke." So when they originally approached me, I was like, "I'm not that guy, there's no way." I think I told them flat out I'm not gonna do this. I'm not trying out for this show. And I was talking the next day to some of the girls in my engineering class and they're like, "Are you kidding? You'd be perfect for that show." They were really, really excited and they wanted me to be on it, so I was like, "Well, I guess I'll try out." And it worked out.

What's involved in the audition process?

Katie: I'm not really sure what's involved in the audition process. I know, for me, they just called and asked me to send in a home video. Well, no. I mean, I didn't even send in a home video. I had sent in a home video for Age of Love. For me, they just made me fill out an application.

How about you, Luke?

Luke: Yeah, I had an interview in Columbus, and then after that, I had to send in another short little video of myself and went out to L.A. and got to hang around there, and things just worked themselves out.

Cool. What were your first impressions of each other when you first met?

Katie: When we first met, we both had different people we wanted to be partnered with. I really wanted to be partnered with Dave, and Luke really wanted to be partnered with Hollie. So, when we were partnered with each other, I mean, instantly we clicked, and our friendship started to blossom from the very first minute. I mean, we were really excited and we made a great team.

Luke: Yeah, I think I was sad that Hollie and I weren't partnered for about two minutes after I knew I got Katie, and the more I talked with her, the more I realized we had a lot in common, which was funny because I didn't think we would have ever been as close and as good friends had we not been paired together. I could have missed out on one of the best friends that I ever had.

And what did you think from last week, what did you think about Will and Rebecca going home?

Katie: I mean, we were sad to see them leave. Every week when somebody went home, we were always really sad to see them go. But, they were really a strong team and Will and Rebecca were a threat to everybody. I mean, once they won three challenges in a row, we kind of saw it coming. We were prepared for them to go.

Luke: I really think that when you win a lot and people realize that you're a threat to them. So, it wasn't anything personal, not like we didn't like them as people. I got along with Will fine, you know, we were cool with each other. It was just more of the fact that he was the strongest threat, and if you make yourself known as a strong threat, then people are going to definitely notice.

Right. Okay, let's talk about the makeovers now. This is always my favorite episode of the show, and it's just so exciting to see everyone change. So, Luke, tell us about your experiences. Was it fun?

Luke: I was a little bit apprehensive for it because I've had the same haircut forever, and I'm really partial to my hair because it's been with me through a lot. So, I was very protective. At the same time, you know, I thought a change would be good. I had the opportunity to be styled by professionals and they could tell me, "Hey, this is what works and this is what doesn't work." What's better than having a professional tell you, "Hey, you should do this." That's advice I'm going to listen to.

Right. Did you keep your look once you left the house?

Luke: I go to a salon to get my haircut. I'm getting it re-dyed again in a week or two. And also, my wardrobe has been more beefed up. It's a lot more than just the one outfit shot on the show. The first thing I did after getting back was go shopping for new clothes. My shoe count has now tripled. I have different types of shoes for different situations, different colors of shoes. It's funny because my wardrobe before, I took the entire closet and just threw it out, and got everything entirely new.

Katie, are you happy with how Luke's makeover turned out?

Katie: Yeah, I was thrilled. You know, I really felt the biggest thing about Luke's makeover is that his confidence skyrocketed almost immediately. I mean, he stood up straight, he looked a foot taller, he smiled from ear to ear. Just knowing that his outfit finally matched his insides really made me happy, and to see how confident he was was more than I could have ever asked for.

Was there something that you wished the stylists had done for him that they didn't, or anything like that?

Katie: I thought that they did absolutely everything they needed to do. When he went in to get his makeover, I was like, "Okay, this is how I want them to cut your hair, and this is how I want your pants." They did exactly, exactly what I hoped they would.

Who do you think had the best makeover?

Katie: I think Luke had the best makeover, just because the makeover isn't always about just what's on the inside, err, just about what's on the outside. It's just as equally important what's on the inside. And the fact that it changed his full self-confidence. I think that's truly what a makeover is all about. I thought Luke definitely had the best makeover.

Luke: Thank you.

Katie: I also thought Nicole did too. I thought she looked just like a princess.

Luke, what do you think? Who had the best one? You can say yourself.

Luke: That's hard because for me, it's all about how you show yourself afterwards. I feel bad not saying. Everyone looked the same to me right after the makeover. When I look at John, everyone was like, well, he looks much better. I've always been someone who doesn't really, I've always been more function over form. And so, you know, when I first saw everyone, they looked the same as they did before, and for me, confidence is a lot more important. Even if you don't wear the best clothes, it's how you carry yourself and how you view yourself. That's what's important to me. I have to admit that still, I don't care that much about looks. For me, when I dress myself up and I look good, I feel more confident. That's why I do it, not because I want to look great.
