Exclusive Interview: Amanda of 'Beauty and the Geek'
Wednesday, September 26, 2007

AmandaAmanda Hanshaw, the aspiring Playboy model from Warren, Ohio, was the first beauty to be eliminated from Beauty and the Geek. She spoke to BuddyTV today about her experiences in the Beauty and the Geek mansion. Below you will find an audio file as well as a transcript of the interview. Plus, read on below to vote in the poll about whether you knew what the acronym OPEC stands for.

Hey everybody, this is Debbie from BuddyTV, and I'm here with Amanda from Beauty and the Geek. Hi Amanda.

Hey everybody.

Amanda, you were the first beauty to be eliminated from the competition. How did you feel when that happened?

Unfortunately, yeah, Tony and I were the first to go. However, you know, somebody has to be the first to go and I know that that was definitely a hard decision for William and Tony, not William and Tony, William and Rebecca to have to make. You know, it's definitely not a position that I would want to be in.

You know, the questions that you got in the elimination room, I thought, were a lot more challenging than Natalie's and you came really close to answering them. I'm sure that not a lot of people know what OPEC stands for. So, do you think it was a little bit unfair?

This is a two-part answer because, you know, definitely, 3 Ball [Productions] tries to make everything fair. There were a lot more questions that were asked between both teams. However, based on the allotted time that they had to run the show, they weren't able to show all the questions. So we did get questions right and the other team got questions right and questions wrong. I did, overall, think that my questions were harder than Natalie's, but, you know, they were just the questions that I picked. I picked the questions, I picked the numbers and they ended up, you know. Fair or not, that's how it went. But I would like to see a poll. I would like to see what the percentage of the general public actually know what OPEC stands for. I'm just kind of curious.

Yeah, I can put a poll in the interview when I publish it, so you can check back and see.

I would really like to know. You know, maybe it might make me feel a little less, you know, unintelligent.

So, there were more questions than just the ones they showed on air?

Yeah, I mean, the public's gotta realize that when, you know, you film reality television, you have a 60-minute show and you have days and days of taping and they have to put everything into a 60-minute show. And, you know, they had the big reveal when the new couple came on, and that was something that was put in there. Interaction with the new couple, and two challenges, and an elimination, and there's a lot of stuff that they have to put on, you know, for the show to be able to air in 60 minutes. They'll have to take some stuff out and, you know, I wished that they would have shown us getting some questions right, and I might not have felt like such a dummy. But, you know, that is what happened. We had a good round. We had a good round. We had a good round with them. You know, they went a couple times, the guys went a couple times to elimination and we went a couple times to elimination, and we ended up going head-to-head. And in the end, OPEC was the question that got us out and...I don't know.

So, was there something else that happened during the week that you wished had been shown on air?

From last night's episode, I think I kind of came across as a little bit mean to Tony, and I think that there was a lot of communication going on between Tony and I that wasn't necessarily aired. I don't know necessarily if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but I definitely wasn't mean to Tony at all. We just, you know, we just had a little bit of an argument and we ended up forgiving each other and then it really wasn't a big deal. But, you know, that little conversation on the bed was, that's what it was, when he said he wanted to talk to me. And it was just about a little argument that we had. You know, I don't even know necessarily if that was even on camera, so maybe that's why it wasn't shown. And that was the little make-up thing. And I was a little bit mad at him for that way. That's why I didn't forgive him initially. But if you look at the commercials before the episode aired, I did give him a great, big hug and I forgave him for that. You know, that took place after the actual conversation that we had. I definitely love Tony and I wish that they would have shown the good and the bad a little bit more. But, you know, that's definitely gotta be hard for 3 Ball. There's so much stuff that they want to air. Not just about Tony and I, you know, and I don't conceited, saying that they should have shown more of us. Just stuff about everybody that I'm sure people wish that they would have shown more of.

So, did you get along with other people in the house too? How was the whole dynamic?

I think that we have the best season so far, but, you know, I think that definitely I might be partial about it because I'm on this season. But the cast was great. I got along with everybody. You know, there's some people stood out to me more than the others, and some people that I'm definitely going to keep in touch with. I hope to keep in touch with everybody, and that's including production. You know, 3 Ball was an awesome company to work for, so you know I definitely plan on keeping in touch with everybody. But, you know, sometimes that doesn't always happen even though you mean it to. But there are a few people that no matter what happens I'll definitely stay in touch with.

Who are those?

Tony, obviously, and Katie and Sam and Luke are the people that I'll definitely stay in touch with. But I feel like Shay and Natalie have personalities that, you know, reflect mine a lot, and, you know, Jen's a cool person. I didn't get a chance to hang out a lot with Rebecca and Shay—not Rebecca and Shay, I'm sorry—Rebecca and Hollie, just a little bit. Jasmine's a super sweet girl. She comes across a little bit ditzy but she's actually extremely smart. And the guys, I don't know, I like all the guys. I just didn't get as much time to bond with them, but I think I did bond with them maybe more so than a lot of the other beauties in the beginning. So I hope that everybody gets a chance to spend some time with them.

Yeah, I agree. I think everyone comes across really nice on the air, so it must have been fun. You were only in the house for a short time, but what did you hope to gain from being on Beauty and the Geek, and do you think, what did you learn from your experience there?

I kind of think the show, the show is about, for both the beauties and the geeks, I think the entire show is based on the premise of, that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, that there's more to people than the way they appear on the outside. And a lot of the reason why I went on the show was because I kind of wanted to prove that. I wanted to prove to people that there's more to me than just what I look like. You know, a lot of people are judging certain people on the show very harshly based on, you know, outside opinions. I really hope that people remember that the premise of the show is not only about change and growth, but just basically that you have to look, you know, at a person for more than what they look like or how they act or what they study or what they do for a living. There's more to people than, I guess, the first impressions.

So, what did you take from it that you are now applying in your life?

I tried to look at myself as more of a stronger person. I try not to second guess everything that I do and everything that I say. I do, like, I have a lot more to offer than what I initially thought that I had to offer. You know, I've always thought that I was an intellectual person, and I've always thought that I had important things to say, but it was just very hard for me to say them because I felt like nobody wanted to hear that and all they wanted to do was see me, you know, based on what I look like. And I felt like, you know, my actually speaking my opinion and saying the things that I wanted to say just annoyed people because they just wanted to look at me. And I kind of feel like I've learned that it doesn't really matter, you know, what people think. But I'm a good person and I do have a lot to offer and what I have to offer goes so far beyond what I look like and the things that I do for a living.

And what about now? What are you up to these days? Do you have any plans for the future?

I've actually been doing a lot of stuff for Playboy. I've been working for them for about a year and a half now and I have a lot of stuff coming up. Playboy TV, the Cyberclub, womenofplayboy.com. So there's a lot of stuff that's coming up for me. I just recently moved. I'm doing a lot of stuff. I hope to continue on doing the stuff for the next couple years and, you know, in the next two years, I'd like to get married and settle down and have a family. That's my ultimate goal. Maybe I can look back on this one day and show my kids and they'll be proud of me. I hope everybody looks at this and they're proud of me.

Yeah. Are you gonna watch the rest of the season?

Oh, definitely. And I really want to say that to people. I know that there's a lot of people out there, and I really, really appreciate the fact that there are these people out there. But then there's a lot of people out there that said that they're not gonna continue watching because either they really like me or they really like Tony or they like us both together and they're upset we left, and there's people out there that don't like the twist, they don't like new guy beauty and the new girl geek. But they're definitely great people. They really, really are. You know, they're genuine people, they're not acting. Nobody on the cast is acting. It's a terrific show, the cast is great. And I really encourage people to continue to watch it. And I'm not saying that because 3 Ball told me to say that. They definitely didn't. I haven't had any contact with them, just doing the interviews. You know, I'm just saying that because genuinely I got to know these people and I just think that they're great people and I'm excited to watch them grow and change and I really that it's gonna be an amazing thing for everybody else to watch. I just really with the public got the opportunity that I got to get to know these people.

Did you know what OPEC stands for? Be honest!!
Yes, absolutely!
No, but I could probably figure it out.
Not at all. I couldn't even come close.
