Beauty and the Geek: Geek Love
Saturday, December 15, 2007

The premise of Beauty and the Geek has always been the underlying assumption that somehow, the essential geekiness of the Geeks somehow makes them less appealing, in stark contrast to the more obvious appeal of the Beauties.

The one flaw in this is that there have always been those who are specifically attracted to Geeks exactly for their geekiness. Josh Herman, who won season 2 of Beauty and the Geek along with partner Cher Tenbush, recently outlined an easy guide to identifying your Geeks for those who might be susceptible to some Geek Love.

The categories, which Josh developed for Tango Magazine, primarily breaks the Geeks down by main areas of interest, with keys to identification, as well as helpful pick-up tips.

You have your Manga or Comic Book Geek, with whom, Josh advises, “Be prepared to discuss who would win in a Batman vs. Spider-Man fight.”

For the Sci-Fi Geek, you'll want to “Refrain from making any sudden movements around their limited edition X-Files, Lost, or Babylon 5 figurines.”

The Computer/IT Geek might be difficult to encounter in the wild, but, while you might not be approached, “your computer might. Know the difference between Windows, Leopard, and Linux. If he compliments your As, Bs, Cs, or Ds, save the blushing — he's discussing disk drives.”

Be ready to drop some knowledge to woo a Science/Math Geek, the Beauty and the Geek alum recommends. He says, “Know your Poincaré Conjecture from your string theory. Or don't. As all these are theories, just say everything with conviction, or ‘Maybe it doesn't make sense—in this dimension.'”

And if you're dealing with a Gamer Geek, Josh warns, “It's safer to come between a mother grizzly and her cubs than a Gamer Geek and his TV. To be safe, always carry copies of Halo 3, Guitar Hero and God of War.” So be careful!
