Beauty and the Geek: Episode 4.2, "When Worlds Collide" Recap

Beauty and the GeekAfter the Beauty and the Geek casting call, the second hour of the premiere was dedicated to seeing what happens when the beauties and geeks move into the mansion and meet each other for the first time.

The geeks arrive first to the mansion. Luke is tense and nervous and can't get his words out. Dave, the LARPer arrives wearing a spectacular blue Hawaiian shirt. Joshua is nervous as well, admitting that he unfortunately does not have a sexual history. Aw! He may be as pure as the driven snow, but he has the kind of glasses that turn dark in the sunlight. Tony, who is always wearing a bowtie, says that whenever he has to talk to women, he gets sweat pouring down his axillary region (read: armpits).

The beauties have also arrived at the mansion and it is time for one group to meet the other. Mike instructs the boys go to the study and the girls to go to the adjoining den, which is separated from the study by a curtain. Each person must go into the other room to introduce themselves and to share with the group what they think is their greatest talent.

Will offers to go first. He goes through the curtain. Will's talent is that he composes filk music, which is music related to sci fi and fantasy. He sings an awesome song for them about how an IT guy will resurrect your PC. Poor Will is already losing his hair, and madly mops his brow after meeting the girls.

Hollie goes to the boys' room and does a pretty good Betty Boop impression.

Dave, the LARPer, goes over carrying two swords. His intro is a medieval-esque speech, and he invites Jasmine to a swordfight.

Josh, who is the president of the rubber band club at Berkeley, places a pail atop the head of a beauty and knocks it down with a rubber band. He is the William Tell of nerds.

Rebecca is in school for massage therapy and wants to demonstrate her massaging skills as her talent. Luke jumps at the opportunity to be her guinea pig. He is definitely not relaxed, while she is giving him a backrub, though. Perhaps an unwelcome visitor sprang up without his permission during the massage?

Joshua provides my absolute favorite moment of the entire two-hour episode. He is so nervous that instead of describing himself, he calls his mother and puts her on speakerphone so that she can talk him up to the girls. Oh, I am cringing for him, but this is just too funny.

Then, there is Jesse. Jesse may be my least favorite geek because I am suspicious of his actual geek pedigree. I'm not buying his wardrobe as his earnest choice. He is wearing plaid on plaid and his pants are hiked up a bit too high to be believable. He probably thinks that if he plays up the plaid and the fact that he lives with his parents, then people will believe that he is geekier than he really is and he'll be a shoo-in for the $250,000 prize.

Jasmine is my least favorite beauty. It might just be her grating voice, but she seems like the kind of girl who purposely acts dumb just because she thinks it's cute.

Slumber Party

Mike tells everyone tonight, there will have the first ever Beauty and the Geek slumber party outside. This will give them time to get to know each other before they pick their teams. Everyone goes outside to find the barbecue fired up and the four cabanas where they will spend the night.

At one point, everyone changes into their swimsuits and gets the hot tub. That's really brave of the boys to do that. Hats off to them. It is noted that both Josh and Joshua have forests growing on their backs.

When it is time for people to pick which tent they are going to sleep in, Shay invites Joshua over to sleep in her tent with two other girls. He is definitely in nerd heaven as he stares at Amanda's $8,000 breasts.

The First Challenge

The next morning, it's time for the First Challenge. Mike explains that the girls will undergo an intellectual skills analysis, and the boys a social skills analysis. The results will dictate the course of the rest of the competition.

Dr. Debbie Magids, psychologist, conducts the analysis for the geeks. Their tasks are to 1) draw their ideal woman, 2) kiss Molly the Mannequin as if she were their grandmother, 3) kiss Molly the Mannequin as if she were their girlfriend and 4) take an inkblot test. Joshua has the hardest time with all the tasks. "She's not responding," he says, after awkwardly hugging the mannequin. He gets really neurotic that he can't see anything in any of the inkblots. Being a physicist, he probably mistrusts psychology as a science, anyway.

Dr. Barton Goldsmith, psychotherapist, conducts the test for the beauties. The women have to name in alphabetical order as many countries as they can staring with A. Then he asks them to identify rebuses. For example, R/E/A/D/I/N/G is "reading between the lines." Hollie is very good and gets them all, while everyone else struggles to get any. The next test is for them to solve an algebra word problem on the board. And finally, there is a reading test. All the girls must read a passage aloud. Everyone trips up over all the big words, including "obsequious" and "sycophantic."

And the Winner Is...

The results are in. Shay and Joshua got the lowest score on the test, but Mike tells them that it's a good thing. The whole Beauty and the Geek social experiment, he explains, is all about change, and this challenge proves that Shay and Joshua have the most to gain. As their reward, they get to choose their teammates, as well as everyone else's.

After an hour of deliberation, everyone meets at the staircase to find out their partners. Everyone is dressed up to the nines, including Joshua who is wearing an Escher-patterned tie. You can't make this stuff up!

The teams are:

Shay and Joshua
Amanda and Tony
Jasmine and Dave
Erin and Jesse
Natalie and John
Jen and William
Rebecca and Will
Hollie and Josh
Katie and Luke

Shay and Joshua decided to pick each other because they want to fly under the radar. Amanda is ecstatic because she only wanted Tony and that's who she got. Tony is ecstatic that a girl actually knows his name. Dave and William are not happy at all, Dave because he just knows that Jasmine's voice and airheadishness will drive him crazy, and William because he's afraid of Jen who can probably bench press his entire body weight. Hollie is sad because she felt a real connection with Luke but didn't end up with him. Everyone else is more or less happy with their partners.

Twists and Turns

Before they can go off and pick their rooms, this season's twist is revealed. Mike announces that for the first time in the history of B&G, there will be a himbo and a nerd-girl. He introduces the tenth and final team, composed of Sam the professional party promoter and Nicole the musicology student. If ever there were a person who looked like a professional party promoter, it is Sam. Nicole, likewise, is dressed her part, wearing a dress with sandals and white athletic socks.

The premiere ends with a montage of scenes from the rest of the season. There are lots of tears, lots of frustrations and even what looks like a romance! Can't wait!
