Who is the fifth Cylon?  It is one of Battlestar Galactica‘s biggest mysteries, and it will be answered this season.  Before you say “it’s so obvious that it is Sta…” how about we make a short run down of the candidates and what we think the odds are that they are the fifth model.  Our choices may surprise you.

Kara “Starbuck” Thrace.  Odds:  1 in a frakking million.
If you think its Starbuck, help yourself to a big plate of  Red Herring.  For Starbuck to be the Cylon would be completely anti-climatic, UNLESS they did the reveal at the beginning of the season, this wouldn’t make a lot of sense.  About the only way you could get away with Starbuck being a skin job is to reveal it unexpectedly early.

President Laura Roslin.  Odds: 1 in 100.
Set up to lead?  In our hunt for the fifth Cylon, we’re looking for two things:  people who were in the right place at the right time to be somebody, or just someone you’d never expect.  Heck, maybe both.  Roslin does fit both categories.  Has a Cylon been in charge of the fleet all along?  After all, the Cylon’s want to reach Earth too.  Does it make sense for them to have a mutual goal?  Why not just escape, find a nice M-Class (sorry, that’s Star Trek, I know) and settle down.  A long shot, but close.

Zak Adama.  Odds: 1 in 20.
Why not.  Starbuck’s old lover, Adama’s dead son.  What are the dramatic implications?  Way coolness, that’s what.  How do you explain his birth though?  Cylons are very sneaky machines, that’s how.

Tom Zarek.  Odds: 1 in 10.
I’m liking Zarek.  If you look at his background, he would make a very smart master Cyclon.  Establishing himself as a heroic freedom fighter, then transitioning into the mainstream. Smart. Smart.

Colonol William Adama.  Odds: 1 in 5.
Adama.  Wow.  OK, the chief sired children, so we don’t need to worry about the fact that he produced children.  And, wouldn’t it just blow your mind, honestly?  I think in a way, we’d be expecting it.  But, not in that big of a way.

Gaius Baltar.  Odds: 1 in 5.
Yes, it is a tie with Adama.  But, Baltar has already been proven not to be a Cylon, right?  Well, can a regular human survive a blast wave by ducking behind a woman?  I say no.  And the fact that we are convinced he is NOT a Cylon, makes him even more suspect.
