MTV is doubling down on scripted television once again. Following a super-sized season 3 order for its hits drama
Teen Wolf, the network is doing the same thing with the comedy
Awkward. The show, currently in its second season, has been renewed for a 20-episode season 3.
Awkward follows Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards), a high school girl who suddenly finds herself in the spotlight after an unfortunate set of circumstances makes it look as though she tried to kill herself. She also finds herself at the center of a love triangle with the sweet but not-that-bright jock who took her virginity (Beau Mirchoff) and the popular class president (and Matty's best friend) Jake Rosati.
The first two seasons of
Awkward were just 12 episodes long. The extended order for season 3, and the larger order of
Teen Wolf episodes, shows MTV's dedication to expanding its scripted programming.
In recent years the network has tried to break into scripted shows with a number of programs, though not all have been as successful as
Teen Wolf and
Awkward. Shows like
Death Valley,
The Hard Times of R.J. Berger,
I Just Want My Pants Back and
Skins failed to catch on.
However,
Awkward and
Teen Wolf have worked and MTV is certainly capitalizing on their success by ordering these extra episodes. The network's next attempt at scripted television is the remake of the British series
The Inbetweeners, premiering Monday, August 20.
Awkward currently airs Thursdays at 10:30pm on MTV.
