
After two successful seasons of
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickelodeon will serve its viewers with yet another run of the animated series. Fans will finally be able to catch the premiere of the highly anticipated season 3 on Friday, September 21 at 8:30pm.
Set in an Asian-influenced world of martial arts and elemental magic,
Avatar: The Last Airbender is an Emmy Award-nominated animated series that follows the adventures of
Aang, and his friends in their quest to save the world from the ruthless Fire Nation. According to Nielson, the series is ranked among the top 10 animated properties on commercial television and reaches a total of 18.4 million total viewers, including 8.9 million kids aged 2-11 and 5.8 million kids aged 6-11.
"Fans on Nickelodeon's message boards and countless
Avatar online fan sites have been clamoring for the third season to begin since the second season finale," Marjorie Cohn, Nickelodeon Television Executive Vice President of Original Programming and Development, said. "We're excited that season 3 is finally here and it delivers great character moments, exciting action and resolves the story arc which has captivated us since the series debuted. It's sure to be the best season yet, and we are confident fans will agree."
In the premiere episode of
Avatar season 3 called “The Awakening,” fans will see Aang, the lead protagonist, waking up to find himself aboard a captured Fire Nation ship after enduring serious injuries at the end of season 2. He struggles to fight his urge to face the Firelord before he is ready but gradually accepts that he needs time to heal and regain his strength.
Katara,
Sokka, and their father are with Aang, while
Zuko is struggling with his own issues as he journeys home for first time in three years, fearing his father will reject him once again.
In line with the upcoming season, Nicktoons Networks will air mini-marathons of
Avatar seasons 1 and 2 from Monday, September 17 at 2pm through Thursday, September 20. Following the premiere of season 3, new episodes of
Avatar: The Last Airbender will continue to air in its regular time slot every Friday at 8:30pm ET/PT on Nickelodeon.
