Scott Holmes was born on May 30, 1952 in West Grove, Pennsylvania. He started his stage career shortly after graduating from Catawba College, when he was cast for the lead role in a touring production of Godspell. He then earned his equity card at the Civic Light Opera in Pittsburgh. He moved to New York to pursue a successful Broadway career. Holmes is also a talented singer who performed in a critically acclaimed night club act, Alone for the First Time. He was also featured in CDs from several of his Broadway shows as well as RCA's A Soap Christmas. His hobbies also include sports and teaching swimming classes. He is a certified diver and water safety instructor. In 1987, he was cast for the role of Tom Hughes in As the World Turns.

Tom Hughes is played by Scott Holmes in the soap opera As the World Turns. Tom was born to Bob Hughes and Lisa Grimaldi. He also has five half brothers and sisters. His first wife was Carol Demming, and their marriage ended in a divorce. He was then married to Natalie Bannon whom he also divorced shortly. Margo Montgomery was the woman he had the longest marriage with, among his three wives. He had one son with Margo and another with a woman named Emily Stewart. Tom has committed crimes such as stealing, drug addiction and assault.
