Kathryn Hays was born on July 26, 1933 in Princeton, Illinois. She was raised in Joliet, Illinois. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s she appeared in many sitcoms and dramas and in 1982 she was cast for the role of Kimberly Sullivan Hughes on As the World Turns. In 1968, she appeared on Star Trek, playing the role of Gem, a mute alien capable of assuming the pain and injuries of others and healing them. She also played the role of Leslie Bauer on Guiding Light and appeared on a Broadway production, Dames at Sea. She was married thrice, most notably to the actor Glenn Ford, whom she was married to for three years.

Kim Sullivan Hughes is played by Kathryn Hays in the soap opera As the World Turns. Kim has evolved from an adulterous sister to a loving member of the Oakdale community. Her life is filled with drama and tension, as her first husband Jason Reynolds widowed her. She also fell in love with her sister's fiancé, Dr. Robert Hughes as they were about to marry. Robert reciprocated her feelings and had a one night affair with her when they were in Florida. Coming back to Oakdale, she was pregnant, as her sister was, too with Robert. She married John Dixon instead, to avoid ruining her sister's marriage. Her baby was stillborn, however, after many years, it was revealed that the baby, Sabrina was alive and living in England. Sabrina was stolen as a baby by Rick Ryan who sold the baby to adoptive parents.
