Helen Wagner was born September 3, 1918 in Lubbock, Texas. She was educated at Monmouth College in Illinois and earned her degrees in dramatics and music. When she moved to New York, she trained in voice and piano and sang in various church choirs. She also participated in theater productions, summer stock, hospital benefits and tours. Wagner is an accomplished singer, having performed at the St. Louis Municipal Opera. her television appearances include dramatic television roles, and Studio One, Philco Radio Television, and Suspense productions. She was cast in As the World Turns as Nancy Hughes in 1956 and played the role ever since.
Nancy Hughes is portrayed by Helen Wagner on the soap opera As the World Turns. Nancy was a traditional housewife and feminist when she was temporarily a secretary. Later on she became a volunteer at the Oakdale Memorial Hospital where her son also worked. She married Christopher Hughes and had four children with him. Her husband died after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and after a considerable mourning period, she got married again, this time to Dan McClosky.
