Donald Francis "Don" Hastings was born on April 1, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York. One of his first roles was The Video Ranger, Captain Video's teenage sidekick on the series Captain Video and His Video Rangers. In 1956 he played the role of Jack Lane on the soap opera The Edge of the Night. This stint lasted for four years. In October 1960, he was cast for the role of Dr. Robert "Bob" Hughes on the soap opera As the World Turns. He has also written for the soap operas Guiding Light and As the World Turns.

Dr. Robert "Bob" Hughes. M.D. is played by Don Hastings in the soap opera As the World Turns. He was the youngest of the four children of Chris Hughes and Nancy Hughes McClosky. He was married to Kim Hughes and has four children, two of which was with Kim. He was a man of honor who built his medical career and succeeded at it. However, he faced a professional crisis when three of his patients died under his care. He was suffering from memory lapses during that time, and he was forced to let go of his position as the head of the hospital. Later, the number of deaths at the hospital increased and everyone was convinced that there was a serial killer on the loose. Bob was the one to find the journal of a murdered nurse, revealing that Dr. Decker was the killer. Bob soon turned out to be another victim though he survived and was able to nail the killer.
