Long-running soap operas seem to be getting the axe these days, as CBS has pulled the plug on another one: As the World Turns. First it was Guiding Light that was canceled, and now here's more news of termination.
After 54 years and more than 10,000 episodes, it comes down to this. The network has announced yesterday that As the World Turns will not be around for long, with its last episode is set to air next September.
Though we risk sounding like a character from a soap, we just have to say it. It looks like the end of daytime dramas as we know it. Procter & Gamble, the company responsible for both
Guiding Light and
As the World Turns, is going out of business in this area. Times are getting tougher, so it's no wonder they decided to finally stop airing the shows.
Executive producer Chris Goutman told
ET Online, "We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show's loyal audience."
With
Guiding Light and
As the World Turns being canceled, the only daytime drams left for CBS are
The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as
The Young and the Restless. But it doesn't seem as though either has the staying power they once had.
Still, there's still hope for the fans of the show. Brian T. Cahill, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, TeleNext Media, Inc. told the publication: "We are proactively seeking a new outlet to carry the show, and are open to exploring innovative formats and relationships that will enable the future success of 'ATWT.'
It's going to be difficult business to keep these up given the competition in these modern times. Now if all these soaps end up canceled, it would certainly be quite a travesty.
