When we last saw Dr. Ivo (Dylan Neal) on the island, he pleaded with Sara (Caity Lotz) to come back to him, but she flat out rejected him. In response, Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Sara made it their mission to take over Ivo's freighter with Slade's (Manu Bennett) help. On next Wednesday's episode, "The Promise," they all come together.

I spoke with Dylan Neal about how Ivo views himself, the relationship between Ivo and Sara, and he teases the meeting between Ivo and Slade. Read on for edited excerpts from our conversation.

Ivo proclaims that he wants to save mankind. Does he see himself as noble man? Perhaps even a hero for what he's trying to do?

Yeah. It gets to the episode that's coming up. We learn exactly why Ivo started this hunt for the serum and he feels very justified in what he's doing. He's a bit of a complicated guy because on the one hand he has an altruistic purpose to finding the Mirakuru, but he's also quite clearly a twisted individual and the experimentation he's been doing to the prisoners on the ship obviously are not terribly altruistic. So that's what's compelling about the character. There's some good behind he's madness, but he's a twisted individual.

We see two sides of Ivo. After he begged Sara to come back, he quickly turned on her. What is his connection to Sara?

Always keep in mind that Ivo is at his heart a manipulator and he'll do whatever it takes to get his way. And, so, in that phone call is a great example of he's trying to pull on Sara's heartstrings. They had a rapport and they had an understanding that the research was for a higher purpose in that presence and her involvement in this research really keeps Ivo grounded and keeps the darkness away.

There probably is a certain truth to what he's saying, but of course he's saying all this to ultimately manipulate Sara and to bring her back. But, I do think that he does have a bit of a special bond with Sara in his own mind. He deeply did care about her. He did sort of rescue her from research that he could have done on her and then treated her like an aide, sort of like a partner. I think even Ivo is a bit conflicted about what Sara means in his life. At the end of the day, he's a manipulator and he'll do whatever it takes to get his way.

Now that Sara has turned her back on him, will that push him further to the dark side?

Oh, absolutely. Now it's all gloves off and he's going to go out to get her. He feels like he's been betrayed and the dark side of Ivo will come to the fore now.

Would you say that any emotional connection between them is gone now?

I think Sarawould have to be as conniving a manipulator as Ivo to fool him into believing she was temporarily mistaken in her judgement about him. I don't think that Sara would be able to win him over at this point and you'll see in "The Promise" that everything moves forward to a point of no return. And without giving anything away Ivo's future will be forever changed in the next episode. The whole show's future will forever changed in the next episode I appear in.

Now that he's lost the Mirakuru, is getting it back going to be his main goal?

As it's explained in the next episode, it will always remain his primary goal. He does have a time constraint in his own personal life as to why he needs to continue moving forward with this, but Slade is going to become a major, major factor in this now going forward. And, without giving things away, Slade and Ivo are now kinda joined at the hip.

They come face-to-face then?

Oh, yes! Most definitely they come face-to-face in the next episode.

It's interesting to think of the two of them together now since they are both a little crazy.

While the stories intertwine and Ivo's actions now directly affect Slade's actions going forward because of the death of Shado and the choice that Ivo made Oliver make between Sara and Shado. So all of this will seed. The writers of the series have had a long term game plan in mind and this episode illuminates all the question marks of where we were going, why were things happening the way they did.

It's all going to be revealed in the next episode that I'm in. And going forward I have no idea yet what they are going to do with Ivo. He's still there, but there's ... while so questions have been answered, now there's a big question mark going forward with Ivo and I'll be waiting with the rest of you. I'll be going back.

Anything else you want to tease about Ivo's return?

This is a big, big, culmination of where Ivo's been going all season. It sets Slade on his future journey and his relationship with Oliver. Really, it's really a big, big moment for the show in general and I, even myself, don't know exactly where Ivo is going now next. But, quite certain we'll be seeing more of him after this next episode.

I hope we see Ivo in the present day.

Yeah, that would be fun. I would love to keep coming back. I have my own series, but the shooting schedules are different, so I'm able to do both which is what's so great about this. Usually when you're on a TV series, you get kinda stuck and you can't do other long term projects, but the timing of these two works really well. I'd love to keep working on Arrow.

Arrow airs on Wednesdays at 8 pm ET on the CW.
