America's Next Top Model, Cycle 8 Episode 9 "The Girl Who Picks a Fight" Recap
America's Next Top Model, Cycle 8 Episode 9 "The Girl Who Picks a Fight" Recap

Tyra Banks is on a budget.  She only has so much new footage each Cycle of America's Next Top Model, so sometimes she has to stretch it out a little bit.  This week was one of those times.  Rather than air a new episode, she has just patched together some highlights from the season thus far, and added some "never before seen footage!"  There's a secret about this "never before seen footage."

It was "never seen before" because it wasn't compelling enough to make it into the actual America's Next Top Model episodes.

But that's okay!  We will take what we can get of our modelettes.

There was one thing I was more than happy to have the chance to see again, and that was Kathleen DuJour's attempt to figure out how to model "Anti-Fur" in the "Issues" shoot.  As she asked one of the makeup artists: "So do I look at the fur stank?"  I will never understand why on earth they eliminated in the first episode someone who came up with that sentence.  The entertainment potential for this girl was clearly high.

Next we see some activity as the girls settled into the house, included a funny fashion show where four of the girls dressed up out-of-character, including Cassandra Watson doing a bang-up job protraying a fiery Russian.

The girls also got a good introduction to what life with Jael Strauss was going to be like; as one of them put it:  "She's like a female Kramer."  Renee decided that it might be best to room separate from her, and Jael seems to be hurt by this since the two had started out closer.

Then we see a trio of painful episodes for some of the girls.  Natasha got a fairly severe burn from an errant curling iron at the "High School Cliches" shoot.  Cassandra got frostbite on her hand at the "Sweet Treat" shoot, and had to take a trip to the hospital.   Then Natasha endured even more pain when taken to the dentist to have a tooth removed.  She apparently can't use any medication so the tooth was removed without it, which looks agonizing.

And then we see the fight that gives the episode its title.  Renee and Brittany had previously butted heads in the house, but seem to have made up, at least enough to be civil to one another.  For some reason, this enrages Dionne, who called them fake and wound up needing to be talked down from starting a physical fight with Renee.

The America's Next Top Model house got messy, Renee and Natasha cleaned it up.  Yawn.

During their acting lessons, the girls played Panel, with Natasha showing yet again that while she might have a thick accent, she still has a knack for physical mimicry.  She played Tyra and perfectly captures the host's melodramatic elimination delivery.

Wrapping up with the girls' arrival and first few days in Australia, we get more comedy from Natasha, this time, though, it's unintentional.  In her on-the-street interviews, she asks some Aussie what their favorite American colors are.  They responded "Red and blue."  She says, "No, pink."  What?

Next episode, we will be back to the usual challenges, shoots and eliminations.  Now with five girls remaining - Jaslene, Dionne, Natasha, Brittney and Renee - we are getting closer to learning who will be America's Next Top Model.
