Last week, I took a look at the photos of our new batch of America's Next Top Model Cycle 11 modelettes, and made some totally shallow assessments based on nothing but those pictures.
The CW Network has helpfully also provided us with some introductory videos, though, and so, now armed with watching those, and seeing our modelettes talking and moving around, here are some preliminary predictions.
I'm also going to try to read the tea leaves with some external clues from seasons past and from one key point about the videos themselves.
Upon first viewing, I couldn't help but group some of the modelettes by personality types. Analeigh, Marjorie and Hannah appear to be this season's “quirky” girls or moonchildren-types, a la Amis Jenkins or Anya Kop.
Lauren Brie, Samantha and Clark seem to be the type of straightforward pretty girls whose self-confidence brings out Tyra Banks' inner mean girl who wants to tear them right down. Clark, especially, seems like she could risk getting the dreaded “pageant girl” moniker if she always sounds as studious as she did in the video. (Of course, pageant poise didn't ultimately hold back Whitney Thompson from winning last cycle of America's Next Top Model.)
Elina, Sharaun and Sheena all seem driven and competitive as well, but with the sort of charisma that can sometimes make Tyra respond more positively than she does to other forms of self-confidence. Elina's intelligence is a wild card, though, as sometimes the smart girls get on Tyra's nerves and "overthink" the shoots. If she has natural modeling ability and can appear humble in front of the judges, she could do well.
And speaking of Sheena, here's something interesting: we get two full minutes of her in her introductory video. Most other girls get only one minute, with a couple up to about 90 seconds. But the only other girl to get as much screen time as Sheena is quirky, self-described former “ugly duckling” bilingual Marjorie. Does this mean anything? Are we being given more time to invest in these girls because their stories will be unfolding over the longer season?
Isis is interesting to watch, certainly, but I think her look and presentation is not at the level needed to actually be the first transgendered person to win America's Next Top Model. But she seems like to stick around for a little while at least.
As to a few I haven't mentioned: Nikeysha, Brittany, McKey and Josyln didn't really fall into the major categories above. McKey impressed me less straight on than she did in her shot, but I still think she has an interesting, ‘70's-model type of face that we haven't seen in a while and I think the judges could respond well to that.
I can't assess Nikeysha until they get that weave off her head. Just can't get past it.
Brittany just didn't do much for me in the video or in her shot, but who knows? Maybe I will warm up to her with the right makeover. Stacy Ann Fequiere stayed right on my last nerve right up until the end when I suddenly found her completely charming.
As to who I think could go home? Joslyn strikes me as being another Atalya Slater, Mila Bosonowa or Kathleen DuJour – i.e., a girl who is just a little too bubbly and yet not a strong enough natural model to make it far into the competition. (Anya might have been equally lighthearted, but that girl could model something serious.)
What do you think? Who do you think could be headed home this first episodeof America's Next Top Model?
