Once the
Boogie Bots landed in the bottom two on this week's
America's Best Dance Crew 2, it was as good as over for them. I have said on multiple occasions that that it's impossible to feel unhappy while watching this show, as the earnest efforts of the crews are just so joyful, but I think I have to revise that. No, they were not the best, but man, did the Boogie Bots sure get roughed up by the judges over the past few weeks! It made me feel sad to see how hurt and even a little demoralized the Bots seemed to be. I do think the right crew went home, but what a bummer.
So you probably don't have to guess very hard to figure out who landed in the bottom for my Best and Worst picks of this episode, but that still leaves three crews vying for the top. Who was my Best?
BEST
Super Cr3w. I felt like of all the crews, they had the complete package once again. They have their tricks and athleticism, but their routines are always clean, cohesive and tight. Shane Sparks made a good point: Super Cr3w has been so strong and so complete as a team, it has seemed hard to get a sense of their individual personalities. Boogie Bots might have their robots, but these guys are like parts of one big well-run machine.
I think that as confusing as it might have been, it was actually good that they landed in the bottom two for a couple weeks so that the America's Best Dance Crew 2 audience had the chance to see them struggle and fight, not just steamroll over the competition repeatedly. It humanized the super b-boys of Super Cr3w, and that then makes the fact that their performances are so tight even more amazing.
I liked Fanny Pak's performance, but I continue to feel a little like I want the dancing to be as important as the theatricality. But once again, I also felt like I was missing things because of the camera work during their performance. I don't know if they are just keeping so many planes of the stage in action that it's hard to cover it, but at some point during most of their performances, I always feel like the shots and/or editing are leaving something out.
I also really liked SoReal Cru's performance, and I almost think it was as good as Super Cr3w's. It's so hard to evaluate SoReal Cru fairly simply because they are not as flashy as the other crews, but their dancing, detail and groove are really stellar. They might not have the same hook, but I think their brand of smooth-yet-hard sexy-cool deserves a spot in the competition and I'm glad they are still in the running.
WORST
The judges already covered any negatives about the Boogie Bots, so I'm not going to pile on here. No, it wasn't as good as the other crews, but it was still fun and entertaining. I hope the Bots keep on trying and working together as a crew as I have always said I can see the potential in this crew to really wow a crowd.
It was an awesome episode overall as Missy Elliott's music was absolutely made for America's Best Dance Crew 2. She's always been the kind of performer to reference the classics, but watching the show made me realize just how much her music incorporates early hip hop elements and how much fun that makes them for the b-boy-types to dance to. I hope if there's another season, they bring her back for that as well.
