The 'American Idol' Honor Roll: There's A Certain Energy in Boston, And I Like It!
Two hours of American Idol later, it felt a bit underwhelming. Was it the huge Paula-sized hole that thin Posh Spice can't fill? Or was it something else? It wasn't all bad, Boston gave us a handful of good contenders, and already I'm rooting for at least one of them. Here, then, is my first ever American Idol honor roll: where we highlight the auditioners that stood out last night. Be it in a good way or a bad way.

Last Night's Unsettlingly Clueless Contestant: Norberto Guerrero. I'm used to people who come to the show just for their 15 minutes of fame, but this? It's adorably and terribly unsettling.

Last Night's Huge-But-Acceptable Miss: Derek Hilton. The editors deserve a shoutout for making his segment truly hilarious. That, and I didn't want to give props to that ass Andrew Fenlon--and no, not "ass" like that girl with the leggings. (Speaking of which, here's his band's MySpace page. The band, somehow fittingly, is called Andy Flop.) And... was he wearing his pajamas to the audition?

Last Night's Milked-Up Back Story: Justin Williams.
Yep, the dude who had cancer seven years ago. I think I know what the editors will do with this. But this is the dude whose audition appeared on the promos weeks before, and for good reason: you might remember him from Hollywood last year, performing with that group White Chocolate, featuring other dudes like Matt Giraud and Kris Allen. Then, again, you might not...I certainly didn't remember, I'll admit. But he was in Hollywood last year, and I'd bet he'll be there again.

Last Night's Close Second: Tyler Grady. Tyler, my man right here! The injured drummer with lead vocalist dreams might have chosen the wrong song to audition with--he could've done better with his soulful hints--his Mika-like vibe is just very cheery. You know, like that contestant from last year... what's his name again? Kris Allen?

Last Night's Standout: Katie Stevens. I'm sure you've seen her on YouTube already:

I'll admit, it will take me a while for her to convince me, but I'm surprised at the strength of her vocals. Good ones for a 16-year-old! I'm not surprised she already has a fan page on Facebook.

Well, she's already 17 by the time you read this. She was born on December 8, 1992, and she plays both the guitar and the keyboard. I'm betting we'll see more of her in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed the crew don't milk the story of her Portuguese-speaking Alzheimer's-afflicted grandmother dry.

And there you have it America, Boston's Honor Roll. Did someone you love not make the grade?
