Rumors Fly, 'Idol' Denies: 'No One Has Signed a Deal'

After a few false alarms, it turns out that Jennifer Lopez won't be adding "American Idol judge" to her resume. Yet. Zap2it reports that she hasn't signed her contract for Season 10, and neither has Steven Tyler. Though Tyler tells People.com that he's "probably" going to be joining the show. Meaning I probably won't be surprised when it's announced before I even finish this post.

If Steven Tyler decides he has better things to do than sit around judging people, rumors are circulating that Harry Connick Jr. may be signing a contract instead. But who really wants to be anyone's second choice, right? Harry: stick to singing like Frank Sinatra and wooing middle-aged moms with your Christmas covers. That's your cash cow. Not sitting side-by-side with someone who says "dawg" more times than Ryan Seacrest admires his own reflection. (Sorry, Randy. It's true.)

While Idol hasn't even aired, it's been an eventful couple of weeks with rumors that Nigel Lythgoe is returning as executive producer, Kara DioGuardi is being fired, Ellen DeGeneres is ending her multiyear contract, and every celebrity from Elton John to Jessica Simpson is being considered for the judge seats.

From where I sit, it seems that American Idol has suddenly become a show that is more concerned with who's judging than who's being judged. While producers might argue that top-name celebrity judges will boost ratings, I can't help but wonder if Jenny from the Block and a rocker with equally big hair will become the real stars of the show, trumping those who are actually wielding the microphones. Best case scenario: the judges get way more attention than they need but offer some worthy critiques. Worst case scenario: Idol becomes "that show that J.Lo is on."
