American Idol: Top 7 Results Show Live Thoughts

American Idol will have it's final six by the end of the night.  The odds-on favorite to be eliminated tonight is Phil Stacey, but we could be in for a surprise.  The way I see it, there are three truly safe contestants (Melinda Doolittle, Jordin Sparks, and Blake Lewis), two that are total question marks (Lakisha Jones and Sanjaya Malakar), and two who seem the most likely to get the boot (Chris Richardson and Phil Stacey).  I think that Sanjaya is still safe, but I hope I'm wrong.  Chris probably deserves to go home more so than Phil, but Phil has been wallowing in the bottom three for a while now and it just feels like his time.

We'll find out soon enough.  What follows are my live, unfiltered thoughts while watching tonight's results show.

For the second week in a row, Seacrest shares a moment with Sanjaya during the intro.  I'm not going to even pretend I know what this means.

Simon sets the record straight about his supposed eye roll.  Okay, let's be done with that.  We even get the feed that stayed on the judges to prove that Simon isn't an awful person.

Randy is wearing a silly little hat.

So, along with Martina McBride, Fergie will be performing tonight.  Also, a sneak preview of Shrek 3.

I'm going to resist the urge to say anything about Fergie tonight.  It will be difficult.

We get a full recap of last night.

Sanjaya's performance was sooooo bad.  I don't ever want to hear it again.

We get one of these “Seacrest on the street asking people what they thought of last night's show”.  In the best interests of editing, the people on the street have a wide range of opinions.

Group country song!!!  This won't be corny at all.

They're singing “It's All Right.”

I just can't wait for the group Ford commercial.

Commercial time.

And we're back.

Is there a bigger scam than The American Idol Challenge?  Here, American Idol, please have more money.

Ryan sits down with the finalists.  He asks them what they listen do during their free time.

Jordin has been listening to Fergie.  C'mon Jordin, I want to like you.

Fergie hits the stage.

Ooh, it's a little acoustic number.  I don't think Fergie's ever worn this much clothes.

Remaining female contestants on American Idol who are better singers than Fergie = 3.

But, I did think she just mentioned Uno cards in her song.  Gotta respect that.

Oh, Good God!!!

So, the Ford commercials where the American Idols all appear.  It was a robbery theme or something, set to Flock of Seagulls (“I Ran”).  Flock of Seagulls!  That's right, I'm not lying.

A week from tonight is Idol Gives Back.  C'mon corporate America, sack up.

Another commercial.  That was quick.

Seacrest is now splitting the 7 into two groups: one group has highest vote totals, one has the lowest.

One group has Lakisha, Sanjaya, Blake.

The other has Phil, Jordin, Chris.

Wow, this is baffling.  I guess it could be either one.  Ryan just straight up tells Melinda that she is safe.  No need to beat around the bush.

Ryan asks Melinda to look at the two groups and pick who she thinks has the highest vote totals.  Melinda refuses, and sits down in the middle of the stage.

Wow. Phil, Jordin and Chris are safe.

That means that, finally, Sanjaya is in the bottom three.  He's with Lakisha and Blake.  If one of those two go home instead of Sanjaya it...well, it will just be ridiculous.

Feel free not to look at my prediction up at the top of the page.  I guess it's good to see that a good performance (like the one by Phil last night) will immediately boost vote totals.

Ryan sits down with the bottom three, looks very comfortable on the couch.

The finalists, earlier this week, got a behind the scenes tour of Dreamworks with Jeffrey Katezenberg, to take a look at Shrek 3.

Nice, Antonio Banderas comes and visits the Idols while in the recording studio.  And they all get to see the final cut of Shrek 3.

This feels like a really long commercial for Shrek 3.  Weird, huh?

Martina McBride comes out to sing.  She's all right, I suppose.  Not a big fan of this song, but she's a solid singer and she looks good.

All right, we've got one more commercial and then elimination.  I have a feeling it's going to be Sanjaya this time.  Let's all hope so.

Moment of truth everyone!

Seacrest sends Blake back to the couch. He's safe.

Sanjaya cries a little bit and gives one last performance.

And I turn off the TV before I he starts singing.

Well, that's over.  It feels good, doesn't it?
