The 51st Grammy Awards, held in Los Angeles two nights ago, was something. Yeah, at some points my attention span was dropping like a ball tossed from fifty feet, but for me, the show was about the performances. And, in a night that celebrates the best in music over the past year, it didn't disappoint.
Errr, at the risk of sounding like a
Jennifer Hudson geek, I was watching her performance that night with particular interest. I know, I watched her at the Super Bowl, but I was somewhat distracted with the lip synching—don't worry, I'm not dwelling on that; I'm just easily distracted. But this was another chance for her to shine, after shining in such unfortunate and terrible circumstances—insert obligatory mention of the murders in her family. As always, she didn't disappoint.
Of course, we're not the only ones who thought of that. Fellow
American Idol alumni
Carrie Underwood also performed that night, and she was all praises for Hudson's performance. “I think it was very healing,” she told reporters backstage. “She's handled herself so wonderfully with all the media attention on her family and her personal stuff that she's dealing with, but I think she's handled herself with grace … It's so amazing to see her get on stage and have that healing process and you see it right in front of you. I hope that continues and I hope that she can find peace.”
That night was a good one for both Idol graduates: Underwood took home the Best Female Country Vocal Performance award for her song “Last Name”, while Hudson won the Best R&B Album award for her eponymous debut. While her acceptance speech continues to echo in my head—“I would like to thank my family in heaven and those who are here with me today”—I'll just settle back and wish the best.
