When Seacrest told us at the outset of last night's two-hour Idol Gives Back extravaganza that the result would be the most shocking in American Idol
history, I was skeptical at best. What could possibly be so shocking? We knew that under no circumstances would Jordin Sparks
or Melinda Doolittle
be going home. Even if Blake Lewis
was eliminated, it wouldn't be earth-shattering news. However, by the end of the night, the distinct vibe of charity and goodwill made it fairly clear to the insightful viewer what the twist would be (that that no one would be eliminated).
The bigger ramification of the twist is that two contestants will now be eliminated next Wednesday, incorporating the accumulated vote totals from both this week and last week to determine who those two people are. Who will be the two to head home?
First, we have to assume that Melinda and Jordin are safe. These two can do no wrong at this point, and there's no reason to believe that support for either has wavered. Unless one of them comes out on stage dressed in a chicken suit while performing an a cappella version of the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme, they'll both be in the top 4.
Blake Lewis is still the favorite to the third member of the final three. He's consistently performed better than Phil Stacey
and Chris Richardson
, and he seems to have a lot of fans out there, especially those of the female variety. If he has an abysmal performance next week, then the door will be open for his elimination. However, it would have to be a significantly worse showing than Phil and Chris for that to even be possible. Therefore, I'm going to say that Blake is also safe.
That leaves us three singers, two of which have to be eliminated. Maybe you disagree, but if you look at how these things tend to work out, it makes sense that one guy and one girl will be eliminated. That means that Lakisha Jones is on the chopping block. This will be an unfortunate result, given her immense talent, but it won't be too shocking. Lakisha has been underwhelming on most occasions, failing to live up to her potential. It will be sad, but somewhat deserved.
Then it comes down to Phil vs. Chris. Phil has a better voice, but Chris is a superior, and more consistent, performer. They've both sniffed the bottom a few times, and both have no realistic shot at winning the whole thing. Personally, I think Phil is a little better overall, but I'm going to go ahead and predict that Chris will make the top 4. He's more likable and marketable, and I foresee him receiving a lot of the votes that were previously handed to Sanjaya
So, that is my early, bold prediction: Phil Stacey and Lakisha Jones will be eliminated next week.
Let's hear your predictions. Comment below.
