American Idol: Did Gay Photos Cost Adam Lambert the Win?

On the day after the American Idol finale, it's time to play Thursday morning quarterback.  All season long, Adam Lambert was the clear frontrunner in the competition.  He delivered the most praiseworthy performances, showed off the most impressive vocal ability, and won fans over with his daring fashion and arrangements.

But was it too much?  With almost 100 million votes cast, was the margin of error plus or minus a few scandalous photographs?

When photo of Adam Lambert kissing another guy were first uncovered, it was a surprisingly mild scandal.  After strippers and contestants who posed for nude photo shoots in past seasons, a little man-on-man action isn't too surprising.

It also didn't hurt that Adam Lambert was truly, as Simon Cowell said throughout the entire competition, one of the best singers they've ever had on American Idol.  As Barack Obama proved with the Bill Ayres and Reverend Wright issues, nobody cares about minor scandals if you're awesome.

However, with so many votes and the competition so close, any little detail may have been responsible for tilting the scales slightly in Kris Allen's favor.  In the end, it may have been the tiny minority of voters who actually cared about these photos that gave last night's American Idol win to the humble married man from Arkansas over the flamboyant rocker with eyeliner.

Whether or not this is the case, Adam Lambert's career is far from over.  Twice before American Idol has come down to two male finalists, and both times the runner-up goes on to bigger and better things.  While nobody knows (or cares) what happened to Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken still has legions of fans between his acting and singing on TV and Broadway.

And while David Cook is doing perfectly fine as a rock star, David Archuleta is showing up on Hannah Montana and touring with Demi Lovato, so in the world of tweens, Archuleta is still the king.

So whether or not Adam Lambert's past came back to cost him the American Idol victory, his future is safe.  While gay photos might still be somewhat upsetting to a small portion of the public, it's far less scandalous than it was even a few years ago.  Adam Lambert can kiss all the guys he wants, but it's not going to stop him from having a huge career, even without winning.
