Carrie Underwood continued her reign as one of country music's biggest stars by winning two categories at last night's Country Music Awards, including one for Female Vocalist of the Year. This is the second year in a row in which the former
American Idol Underwood has taken home two separate Country Music Awards. Last year, she won the Horizon Award, which is given to up and coming country artists, and the very same Female Vocalist of the Year award she won last night. In addition, Underwood won Single of the Year for her hit song “Before He Cheats.” In her acceptance speech for the Vocalist of the Year, Underwood became emotional and even started to cry.
Underwood accepted the award graciously, saying, “God has blessed me with so many wonderful things in my life, and I will spend my entire life trying to figure out why. If you had told me a few years ago that I would be nominated with the same people I've been nominated with, I would have called you absolutely insane... It all started for me with
American Idol.”
Another former American Idol alum,
Kellie Pickler, was nominated for the very same Horizon Award that Underwood won last year, but Pickler came up short, losing to Taylor Swift. Still, she performed her single “I Wonder” during the live show. The song is an emotional one (about her mother who abandoned Pickler when she was a toddler) and Pickler left the stage in tears after performing. Winner of the very first season of American Idol,
Kelly Clarkson, was also nominated for an award. “Because of You”, her duet with Reba McIntyre was up for Musical Event of the Year, but they lost out to"Find Out Who Your Friends Are" by Tracy Lawrence, with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw.
