American Idol: Adam Lambert's Sexuality and Hypocrisy

There has been plenty of speculation regarding Adam Lambert's sexual orientation ever since he first arrived on American Idol.  The eyeliner, the hair, the outfits, the musical theater background and the photographs of him kissing other men all seem to point to Lambert being gay, but it's still just speculation.

In a new interview with People Magazine, Lambert addressed the speculation with the non-admission/admission encouraging everyone to "keep speculating."  What's the point of saying that unless he's waiting for his cover like Clay Aiken, Lance Bass or Ellen Degeneres.

Not all titles featured on BuddyTV are available through Amazon Prime.

My initial reaction is to side with Lambert.  Whether or not he's gay is irrelevant and nobody's business.  The problem with that argument is that it can be expanded to anything.  It's not just his sexuality that's irrelevant, it's him and every other American Idol contestant and every other celebrity.  Whether or not Lambert is gay or Lindsay is a drug addict or Britney is a bad mother, the life of the average American will not be drastically altered based on the answer.

Yet celebrities are still deemed important.  Fame, whether we like it or not and whether Lambert likes it or not, is a public career and will lead to intense scrutiny.  Lambert may not want to answer the question, but it will always be there hanging over his head, and the only reason not to answer it is to keep himself in the public spotlight for a little bit longer.  Once he's officially comes out, no one will care.

But that's not what bothers me.  What ticks me off is what else Lambert told People Magazine.  In the interview he also said "It's a really, really cool thing to be able to show people that you can be yourself, and you should be proud of yourself, and you should own who you are and what you're about, and never make apologies for it."

That's like his wardrobe calling his eyeliner black.  Adam Lambert is nothing more than a hypocrite to claim that being true to yourself is important when he refuses to be true to his own sexual orientation either way.  If he's gay, he should admit it, and if he's not, he should just admit that this was all some huge joke based on a bet he made with some musical theater friends that he could get on the cover of Out Magazine.

I agree with Lambert that you shouldn't be afraid to show off who you really are and that you shouldn't apologize for it.  I just wish he'd live up to those words.

Although maybe he is.  Maybe the true Adam Lambert is about more than just sexual orientation.  Maybe Adam Lambert is just a giant fame whore douchebag who will do and say anything to be the center of attention.
