American Idol 8: Looking Forward to Motown Week, Power Rankings and an Early Prediction
Motown is awesome.  Anyone who complains about American Idol once again going back to the well for Motown Week is no friend of mine.  As I stated oh so presciently and oh so brilliantly above, Motown is awesome.  Much of America's best music was created during the classic Motown era, it was hugely influential in the development of pop music and it's full of great, great songs that any legitimate artist can adapt to their own style.  Motown Week is a true test of the American Idol contestants' ability to make a song their own.  I can't blame a person for failing at kicking a Grand Ole Opry song's ass.  But, if you get to choose from the likes of The Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and all the stray tracks from the more anonymous Motown acts, and still fail to put on a good show for America, you really have no excuses.  Maybe singing isn't for you.  So, yeah, I'm really looking forward to Motown Week on American Idol and I hope you are too.

Smokey Robinson, apparently, will be the mentor this week on American Idol.  He and Ruben Studdard will perform (perhaps together) on Idol's Results show on Thursday.  Thanks to President Barack Obama, Idol will move to Wednesday and Thursday this week, wreaking havoc on the weekly plans of Idol fans nationwide.  We must be strong; we will prevail.

As for which singers will benefit from Motown week and which won't, a lot depends on the songs available and who gets their first choice and who is saddled with a song they didn't want in the first place.  But, if we are to assume that everyone gets an agreeable song choice, this is how I see it.

Motown Week will help Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud, Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Megan Corkrey and Allison Iraheta.

Motown Week will hurt Scott MacIntyre, Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Michael Sarver.

Now, this is blatant speculation, but I really think Scott and Michael will be hurt the most, given their relative white-ness.  Adam isn't really fitted for Motown, but who knows what the hell he's going to do anyway.  It'll be interesting, whatever it is.

And, in a pathetically early elimination prediction, I'm going to beat an old drum – Michael Sarver will go home.

Stay tuned all week for our extensive Idol coverage.  What do you think of Motown Week?  Who will it benefit?  Who is going to struggle?  Share your thoughts below.
