American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Lil Rounds
American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Lil Rounds
Can an early favorite win it all at this point in American Idol's career?  It'd be like a NCAA basketball team running the the table.  I suppose it's possible, but highly unlikely.  Lil Rounds has been the most highly pimped contestant since day one, receiving universally rave reviews for every single thing she's ever done.  Simon is in love with Lil, the producers are in love with Lil and, apparently, so is America.  But, has the bar been set too high?  If expectations start out this astronomical, can Lil even think about meeting them?  While Lil may be a very good singer, she's not the second coming of Whitney Houston, and she's definitely not one of the better singers in Idol history.  She's just very good – is that enough to take her to the promised land?

Strengths:

Lil has a classic pop R&B voice, enough power to sing the biggest artists in her wheelhouse.  She has an easy stage presence, and looks to be a consistent performer.  She already has the judges on her side and, since their praise trickles down to the audience and their opinions, she has a leg up in that regard.  She knows how to sing – it's not just her voice.  She knows what she's doing with it.

Weaknesses:

Kind of like Danny Gokey on the male side, I find Lil to be a tad bit bland.  We've seen her type before on American Idol, and it's nothing new.  Not only that, she will not come off looking great if compared to the likes of Jennifer Hudson or Melinda Doolittle.  That being said, on pure vocals, Lil is probably the best female singer this season.  However, she's definitely not the most interesting female singer.  Not by a long-shot.

Best-Case Scenario:

She runs the table, makes her less talented female brethren appear completely outclassed and waltzes into the Top 2 or 3 with relative ease.  Despite her lack of dynamism, Lil has a fighting chance at winning the whole thing.

Worst-Case Scenario:

Even in the face of quality performances, the voting audience grows tired of Lil and, at some point, stops voting for her in big numbers.  This could happen as soon as the Top 8, but more likely Lil will first face danger once at the Top 5 or so.
