American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Adam Lambert
American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Adam Lambert
I suspect that within a month, for better or worse, Adam Lambert will become the face of American Idol 8.  He is going to be a lightning rod of controversy, and it should be fun.  Adam has an absurd rock and roll voice, the kind of range that only the likes of Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury and Stephen Tyler have ever possessed.  This is not an overstatement.  With Adam, it's always going to be about his ability to harness that voice and make himself seem in control.  Because of his range, there will be cries that Lambert is too over-the-top, bordering on ridiculous.  He can't help that he was given the voice he was given, but I can understand people's points.  At what point is it just showing off?

Strengths:

The voice.  It's maybe the best pure voice that American Idol has ever seen, guys and girls included.  Adam is also a confident showman, a relic of his nearly lifelong association with music theater (he starred in Wicked in Los Angeles).  But, really, it's just the voice that you need to pay attention to.

Weaknesses:

Coming across as too over-the-top will be the season-long struggle for Adam.  Even if he knows that this is a complaint, will Adam want to tone it down?  We don't know.  Can he?  We don't know.  Also – there could be some outside-the-show distractions regarding his personal life that could affect Adam and the voting public.  Recently, some pictures of Adam dressed in drag and making out with other men surfaced online.  If Adam is indeed gay, he will eventually be asked to clear up his sexuality in a public forum.  Idol has a history of being reluctant to allow their contestants' sexuality to become any sort of story, and, even in 2009, might not be willing to allow Adam to come out of the closet publicly during the season.  Let's just hope all of this doesn't distract from the music.

Best-Case Scenario:

Adam gives America a series of insane vocals that are impossible to vote against.  He becomes a national sensation, wins American Idol and becomes a successful recording artist.  There is no doubt that Adam could win American Idol this season.

Worst-Case Scenario:

Adam just can't contain himself, and makes indulgent song and performance choices.  The judges, especially Simon, grow tired of his act and start harshly criticizing him, while the personal stuff outside of the show turns into a major distraction.  Worst case, Adam is out by the Top 8.
