American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Danny Gokey
American Idol 8: Analyzing the Top 13 - Danny Gokey
Danny Gokey can sing.  Sometimes, that's all you need.  American Idol saw a great story in Danny from the second he tried out and, ever since, have given Danny ample screen time to shine.  Gokey is a near flawless singer, possessing a great voice, always singing in tune and able to stay within himself.  Add to that an absolutely heart-breaking back story (his wife died mere weeks before he tried out for Idol) and you have the right ingredients for a possible Idol champion.  There's nothing controversial about Danny, nothing that gives him an edge (the guy is a church choir director, after all), but it's almost impossible to dislike the guy.

Strengths:

He has a great voice.  It's not incredibly powerful, but has enough oomph to sing the big songs.  He's capable of throwing some scratch in there, giving Danny a bluesy sound when he needs it.  It is because of this that Danny will be able to move between genres with ease – no theme week will put him in an uncomfortable position.  He proved steady in Hollywood and in his Top 36 performance, so I'm guessing that Danny will continue to provide consistency moving forward.

Weaknesses:

I'll be honest – I think Danny Gokey is a bit overrated.  He's too bland for my liking, too cookie-cutter of a singer.  I recognize his talent, but have never been excited by any of his performances.  If America will start to eventually feel the same way, I don't know.  However, there are flashier male singers in the competition this season (Adam Lambert, Anoop Desai), and ones who are able to play instruments (Matt Giraud, Scott MacIntyre).  Gokey may fall into the background if a few of the people I just named really start wowing audiences.

Best-Case Scenario:

Danny rides his great voice to a string of excellent performances, the judges sing his praises on a weekly basis and he wins the whole thing.  That potential is there for Danny.

Worst-Case Scenario:

America eventually grows tired of his technically sound performances and ends up siding with his perhaps less-talented, but more exciting competitors.  At worst, you have to think that Danny will make it to the Top 7 or 8.
