American Idol 7: Top 8 Results Show Recap
America can be confusing.  I'm just one person, and I know where my head is at and I know how I rationalize things, but no matter how much I can pretend to understand the reasoning of the rest of America they are, and always will, remain a mystery.  Tonight's American Idol left me speechless.  The end result was out of nowhere, though this is something I should have expected – the American Idol results have been shocking all year.  In addition to the results, American Idol aired a lot of leftover Idol Gives Back footage from last night.  Most interesting: the mini-speeches given for Idol Gives Back from the three presidential candidates apparently weren't good enough for Idol Gives Back.

The Bottom Three

Syesha Mercado

This is who I thought would be going home tonight.  Not that she deserved it, but just that it felt like her time to go.  Now that she made it through this week, who's to say she can't make it another week or two?  These days, it's impossible to tell.

Carly Smithson

Carly was the other favorite to be eliminated tonight.  She gave a mediocre and angry performance on Tuesday, and is a veteran of the bottom three.  No one would have batted much of an eye had she gotten the boot.  But, Carly lives to see another day.

Michael Johns

I still contend that, given the right song, Michael showed off the best pure voice of anyone this season.  The guy is good, and has lead singer star quality.  However, he could never really find his groove over the season and faced middling reviews, with a few stand out performances sprinkled here and there.  Still, not many people expected him to go home tonight.  But he did.
