Tonight was a night of surprises on
American Idol. I fancy myself something of a professional elimination predictor, but even my finely tuned prognostication skills were only able to correctly predict one of the four eliminated singers. I even named a handful of contestants who I thought could legitimately go home tonight, and one of those who actually did go home wasn't on my list. Such was the craziness of
American Idol tonight. Even the judges seemed baffled at the results.
First, let's get all the non-elimination stuff out of the way. The Top 20 did the requisite group song(s). It was a long medley and totally forgettable.
Ryan Seacrest announced that on March 11, for the first night of Top 12 performances, the Idol producers have acquired the rights to The Beatles song book. That will be interesting. Idol Gives Back is also returning in April, with a bunch of stars already booked:
Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Brad Pitt, Mariah Carey and many others.
These four singers were eliminated, in this order:
Jason Yeager:
This was completely expected. Yeager was terrible in both of his performances and deserved to head home.
Alexandrea Lushington:
I didn't think there was any way Alex would go home. Her first week performance was really good and, even with a poor song choice yesterday, she managed to do a pretty good job. This was a huge surprise.
Alaina Whitaker:
It was Alaina and
Kady Malloy in the bottom three with Alexandrea. Alaina, however, went home. I thought she was solid, if not spectacular, over the last two weeks and I'm surprised America didn't connect with her youth and innocence.
Robbie Carrico:
It was either Robbie or
Luke Menard. While I can't argue with Robbie's departure (he wasn't going anywhere this season), I though he deserved to stick around over Luke. As Simon said, the issue with Carrico was his authenticity. He wasn't a real rocker.
Most surprising elimination of the night?
