American Idol 7: The 10 Best Performances of the Season
There's been a lot of talk about how disappointing this season of American Idol has been.  In a lot ways, this is a valid complaint.  With FOX and Ryan Seacrest openly declaring that this was the most talented group of finalists American Idol has ever seen, the season was ripe for disappointment right from the beginning.  It's hard to imagine any of these finalists achieving Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson levels of success.  David Cook has a chance to be Chris Daughtry, Brooke White has a chance to be Regina Spektor, Jason Castro has a chance to be Jack Johnson, Michael Johns has a chance to be Jamie Lidell, and David Archuleta has a chance to be Leif Garrett, but there are a bunch of ifs in there.  Despite all this, it was difficult whittling down this list to the top ten best performances of the American Idol season.  There were a lot of good ones.

Just to clear something up: I didn't set out to limit one song per performer on the top ten list, it kind of just ended up that way.  I made my initial list of nominees, and found that it became difficult to choose a lot of individual singers' best songs.  A lot of the reason why was because most of the contestants' best songs were quite similar to each other.  It didn't make sense for me to put, say, both David Cook's “Hello” and “Billie Jean” on the top ten list.  If you disagree with the one I did choose, you can just pretend I chose the other.

Another reason for the one-performer, one-song rule is that I had to insert some objectivity into this list.  While it does reflect, heavily so, my personal preferences, a list of my top ten “favorite” performances would look much different.  Hypothetically, let's say I was a huge David Archuleta fan.  My ten favorites might include 6 different Archuleta songs.  That wouldn't make for a good top ten list, would it?  Regardless, I really loved every performance I put on this list (yes, even #6).  As with the ten worst list, each entry comes with a YouTube video of the performance.  Enjoy, and feel free to comment as you see fit.
