James LeGros was born on April 27, 1962 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up in the Redlands, California, and studied at the Professional Conservatory of the South Coast Repertory. LeGros later went on to pursue higher learning at the University of California as well. Much of his acting work has been devoted to independent films, which were diversified and mostly prominent during the early to mid-90s. Among the movies he has worked on are Living in Oblivion, Enemy of the State, and Where the Day Takes You. He has also acted in television series such as Law and Order, ER, and Sleeper Cell.

Mark Albert is portrayed by James LeGros in the Fox network's Emmy Award-winning television comedy series Ally McBeal.
