Raymond Arthur "Ray" MacDonnell was born on March 5, 1928 in Lawrence, Massachusetts and is best known for his role as Dr. Joe Martin Sr. on the soap opera All My Children. He has been part of the series for 35 years since its inception of the soap. MacDonnell was educated at Amherst College and later on attended the Royal Academy in London as a Fulbright scholar. One of his appearances was a long time portrayal of Philip Caprice on The Edge of the Night, which lasted for eight years. Other appearances include those in Studio One and Armstrong Circle Theatre. He has also starred in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions.
Dr. Joseph "Joe" Martin Sr. is played by Ray MacDonnell in the soap opera All My Children. Joe Martin Sr. is a widower who raised his children Jeff and Tara with the help of his mother Tara. He fell in love with Ruth Bent, a nurse at the local hospital. She was married to an abusive husband who later died in an automobile accident. After the accident, Ruth married Joe. Together they had three sons, adopted Tad, change-of-life baby Joey and Bobby. The two momentarily separated when Joe got attracted to Leona, a patient, but got back together after a while.
