John James was born on April 18, 1956 in Minneapolis. His father is Herb Oscar Anderson, a radio broadcaster. James was married in 1989 to Denise Coward, former Miss Australia for 1978. They have two children. James' first appearance on television was his role of Jeff Colby in the soap opera Dynasty and its spin off The Colbys. He also appeared in Search for Tomorrow and As the World Turns. He was also cast for the role of Dr. Jeff Martin on All My Children.

Dr. Jeff Martin is played by John James in All My Children. Martin is the son of Dr. Joseph "Joe" Martin and his wife Helen. He has four siblings and has been married three times. He also has one son with his divorced wife, Erica Kane.
