On Monday, June 11, 2012, a huge milestone was celebrated: the 10th anniversary of American Idol's debut. As we all know, 11 seasons later, Idol has made an enormous impact on this country and the world, on the music charts, at the box office, award shows and elsewhere. It started out as a summer show that hardly anyone expected would take off in the way that it did.

To refresh your memory on how the juggernaut all began, check out the first nine minutes of the very first episode from June 11, 2002, where we see the introduction of the original panel and the hosts describing how the show will work:

Over the years, American Idol has made its impact on the music charts, with 345 No. 1 songs. Billboard has all the statistics on which contestants from the show have made their mark.

Phillip Phillips Finally Undergoes Surgery

Idol fans everywhere have been wondering when current winner Phillip Phillips would have his surgery to remove kidney stones, the cause of his pain for the past several months. And TMZ reports that, after a delay, he finally had them removed:

"We're told Phillip had the 6 and a half hour long surgery in L.A. yesterday -- and he is recovering well today. The stones that were removed were so huge there was no chance he could've passed them on his own."

Multiple reports are confirming that Phillips will not miss any of the summer tour, which he is scheduled to headline, including from his own rep who says, "He's resting and will be ready for the Idol tour kickoff in July!"
