Born on November 8, 1967 in San Francisco, California, Courtney Thorne-Smith studied at Menlo-Atherton High School and graduated from Tamalpais High School. Prior to her exposure on television, she worked in theater with the Ensemble Theater Company. As an actress, she was popularly known for her inclusion on the night drama Melrose Place as Alison Parker. She was also included on the comedy legal drama Ally McBeal where she played Georgia Thomas. Her other acting credits included Lucas, Summer School, Side Out and Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerd in Paradise.

Thorne-Smith plays Cheryl on the series According to Jim. Here, she portrays the wife of Jim, played by Jim Belushi. More often than not, she supports her husband in his endeavors but struggles to put up with his whimsical antics and schemes. Clever and intriguing, she gives spark to the show with her convincing knack for acting.
