Goodbye, Teddy.
According to TVLine,
90210
star Trevor Donovan will be leaving the show at the start of the
upcoming fourth season. The actor, who plays the now openly gay tennis
player Teddy Montgomery, will not be returning as a series regular, and
according to TVLine, he will only show up for five episodes in season 4
before being written off the show.
This comes after 90210 has already cuts its remaining adult series regular, Lori Loughlin and Ryan Eggold. In season 4,
90210 will focus on the high school students moving on to college, and this new makes it clear that Teddy won't be a part of it.
Season 3 spent a lot of time exploring Teddy's storyline as a closeted gay teen coming to terms with his sexuality and eventually coming out to his friends, ending the year in a healthy relationship with soccer player Marco. However, Donovan was absent from a number of episodes as his storyline got sidelined for others.
The changes for
90210's fourth season aren't only in front of the camera. Former showrunner Rebecca Sinclair is also leaving, replaced by
Life Unexpected writers Patti Carr and Lara Olsen.
I'm not terribly sad to see Teddy go, especially since it might make the teen characters slightly more believable. I've always had a problem with the fact that Donovan (who is 32) was playing a teenager, especially since he looks his real age.
90210's fourth season will return in the fall when it moves to Tuesdays at 8pm on the CW.
