Science fiction and superheroes are what the CW is all about. Following the order for
The Vampire Diaries spin-off
The Originals, the network has added four more new shows to its 2013-2014 line-up:
The Tomorrow People,
The 100,
Star-Crossed (formerly titled
Oxygen) and
Reign.
The CW Renews Nikita and The Carrie Diaries>>Three of these new shows have a fantasy edge, joining
Arrow,
The Vampire Diaries,
The Originals,
Supernatural and
Beauty and the Beast in the network's comfort zone of sci-fi/fantasy (I guess
Nikita kinda, almost fits that genre too). That leaves
Hart of Dixie and
The Carrie Diaries on and island, and they will be joined by another non-fantasy series, the period drama
Reign.
FOX Orders 9 New Shows>>
NBC Orders 6 New Shows>>
Here's a description of the two new shows coming to the CW next season.
The Tomorrow PeopleBased on a British series, this superhero drama follows a group of young people who are the next stage of human evolution, endowed with special powers, working together to fight the forces of evil. It's from the producers of
Arrow and
The Vampire Diaries and stars Robbie Amell (
Arrow star Stephen Amell's cousin), Peyton List (
Mad Men) and Mark Pellegrino (
Supernatural,
Lost).
The 100Set 97 years in the future following a nuclear war that destroyed the planet, a group of 100 juvenile delinquents are sent back to Earth to see if it can be re-colonized. The show stars Henry Ian Cusick (
Lost), Isaiah Washington (
Grey's Anatomy) and Kelly Hu (
Arrow,
The Vampire Diaries).
Star-CrossedTen years after aliens came to Earth and were segregated, nine alien teenagers (The Orion 9) are brought into a human high school to integrate the species, and an alien boy falls in love with a human girl. The show stars Aimee Teegarden (
Friday Night Lights), Matt Lanter (
90210), Malese Jow (
The Vampire Diaries), Grey Damon (
The Nine Lives of Chloe King) and Greg Finley (
The Secret Life of the American Teenager).
ReignA period drama filmed in Europe, this show centers on the teenage life of Mary Queen of Scots in the French Court in the 16th century. If you're wondering what this show is doing on the CW, so am I.
If paired with
Arrow, I see
The Tomorrow People being a huge hit. I'm also excited by
The 100 and
Star-Crossed. I'm definitely a fan of the fact that eight of the 10 shows the CW has on board for next season are sci-fi/fantasy.
