2007 was a rough year for
30 Rock star
Tracy Morgan. He and Sabina, his wife of 21 years, separated, an experience which he likens to having a “death in the family." He was also ordered to wear an ankle bracelet for an additional 80 days last September as a result of his failure to comply with an agreement to abstain from alcohol. Still, the new year means a fresh start, and it seems Morgan is ready to do just that.
Although he is currently going through a divorce, Morgan, who plays notorious celebrity Tracy Jordan on
30 Rock, says that he and his Sabina are in good terms.
“It's very hard. But we're good friends. We stay in contact every day,” Morgan told
TV Guide. “She's still my business partner.”
As for the ankle bracelet, Tracy Morgan said that while it was certainly an inconvenience, it has done wonders for his self-control.
“I had to live without alcohol for six months. So now it's like, I can drink if I want. But do I want to? No. So I know it did good,” he said.
His experience with the ankle bracelet also inspired a humorous storyline in
30 Rock's Christmas episode, which had Tracy Morgan's character sporting an alcohol monitoring bracelet.
“Once the wound heals, you need to make fun of it,” Morgan said, explaining his reason for incorporating his personal experience in the show. “I learned how to do that when we did that show after 9/11. Eventually we were able to laugh again. So the bracelet came off and we made fun of it.”
This year marks a milestone for Morgan, as he is set to celebrate his 40th birthday in November.
“I'm just chillin'. I'm layin' back,” he said when asked how he's preparing for the big 4-0. “I'm heading into my middle age, and it feels good. I did the crazy Tracy stuff already. Now I'm mellowing out.”
Right now, fans can see the
30 Rock star in the new comedy
First Sunday, where he stars alongside Ice Cube and Katt Williams. Morgan said that he had fun working with Ice Cube, “but we were just working. You don't play games with Ice Cube. It wasn't like, ‘Hey, Ice Cube, you want to play Scrabble?'”
