24: The Rookie – Day 3 isn't without its merits. While the production values are low compared to the real
24, and Jason Blaine is no Jack Bauer, the fact that it's even mildly entertaining is a testament to the
24 formula. The way the show is produced, with the concurrent stories and the lightning fast pacing makes even the most predictable story (like The Rookie) not horrible to watch. Here's what happened in webisode four, “Lifeline.”
The fourth episode of
24: The Rookie – Day 3 begins with our hero Jason Blaine, at the Mexico City plaza where Javier Medina is enjoying a nice meal under the Mexican sun. Jason takes a picture of Medina and sends it back to his team in the States. They confirm, after an extensive facial matching software, that the man Jason believes is Medina is, in fact, Medina.
Back in the States, they are trying to discover who the mole is. They figure out that it's Eric, that little weasel. However, they don't want to out him yet, because if it turns out that Eric isn't the mole, then Salazar will probably be alerted. So, this sub-plot is tabled for the time being.
Meanwhile, Jason hits the plaza. Salazar's men show up on their motorcycles, but they're a little late. Blaine makes a fire hydrant explode, to cause a big distraction. He then gets to Medina, who's sipping on some coffee. He sets off a bigger explosion (ostensibly to fake Medina's death). He then takes Medina into their surveillance van and they drive away from the plaza.
My favorite part of tonight's episode didn't really have much to do with anything in the actual episode. I realized that Blaine's point man back in the States looks exactly like NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson. I'm convinced it might really be him.
