Today at 1pm ET/10am PT, FOX unveiled the world premiere of the
24 season 7 trailer live at Times Square in New York City. Even after a disappointing sixth season and
Kiefer Sutherland's legal troubles, the anticipation for the first footage of Day 7 was high as ever.
Mary Lynn Rajskub was on hand in Times Square to watch with legions of loyal fans who turned out on what looked to be a cold fall day in Manhattan. The important question, though, is this: how did the trailer stack up? Is it enough to make fans for get about the mediocrity of season 6?
The trailer begins with Jack Bauer on trial in Washington D.C. He makes it clear that he is not remorseful or apologetic about his past use of torture. He saved lives because of what he did. We have to assume that Jack is exonerated of all charges, because he's quickly taken to FBI headquarters and assigned to help out a team investigating a terror threat.
Then comes the twist that, unfortunately, we've known about for a few weeks: Tony Almeida returns. The FBI says that Tony is the leader of this terrorist group, who are in the process of hacking something called the CIP, which runs much of the country's infrastructure. We'll learn more about this over the course of the season, but it's clear FOX is setting up Tony as the bad guy.
Because
24 is
24 for a reason, I think we can all safely assume that Tony will turn out to be a good guy and he and Jack will eventually team up for some good terrorist thwarting, just like old times. At the end of the trailer, Jack is granted permission to torture an unknown bad guy by a female FBI agent. In the final shot, Jack bellows across a pier "TOOOOONY!"
All in all, it was a satisfying glimpse of season 7. The
24 producers couldn't have had much footage to work with, considering we saw no footage of Bill Buchanan, Chloe O'Brien or newcomer Janeane Garofalo. Being a shameless fan of 24, the trailer got me nothing but excited. I'll be ready and waiting for the two-night premiere. For those who missed it, here's the full trailer.
